There are no outliers, only imperfect people

I just finished watching the movie and I'm still excited. I think it may be because of my lack of experience, and I can't fully empathize with some of the scenes in the movie. For example, why did Max break down and become mentally ill because of Mary's letter? For example, why does Max want to cry so much? For example, why did Mary feel so far away from her husband after receiving Max's letter? But a lot of the plot still resonated with me, and I cried so hard that

Max was an outlier in the eyes of others, and yes, he knew it.

"When I was young, I wanted to be anybody but myself."

He made an effort to imitate the so-called normal person, he drew faces to compare expressions, gave gifts to beloved women, and tried to control overeating. But it was useless, in the eyes of others, he was still an outlier, a patient, disability. However, he doesn't see himself in this way,

"I do not feel disabled, defective or I need to be cured. I like being an aspie! It would be like trying to change the colour of my eyes"

Max told the most important bottom line in his heart Mary, he's not an outlier, just not perfect. Accept your imperfections, love yourself, and let life go on. But no one else understood him until Mary showed up. He thought she understood and trusted her wholeheartedly. It feels so good to have someone who fully understands him, and Max opens up to Mary as the perfect friend. But, Mary's book, ruined his trust. She still thinks that he is a patient, an outlier, and needs to be treated. When I saw this, my heart ached, how deep must Max's wound be. It seems that the previous friendships and feelings are all fake and imagined by oneself. She doesn't understand him, never has, no one in the world understands him. There is no friendship between them.

Max actually has a tendency to perfectionism. He cares about that little bit of cigarette butts, a little bit of phlegm, and a little bit of imperfection. So is the friendship with Mary. So, quit dating! His punishment to Mary was as fierce and decisive as that of the beggar. But, they say sorry. The warmest place in the whole film is here, Max, finally chose to forgive. Because, in fact, the world is not perfect.

"The reason I forgive you is because you are not perfect. You are imperfect, and so am I. All humans are imperfect"

True friendship includes tolerance for imperfection. At this moment, he completely trusted her and believed that the friendship between them was true.

In fact, I can also understand Mary's feelings, from her writing letters, to burning letters, to wanting to help friends, and finally finding out that she has done an irreversible wrong with good intentions, that kind of huge blow. I can also understand that she feels imperfect because of her scar, but after removing the scar, she will still be imperfect. So she learned to accept herself, love herself, gradually gained self-confidence, and gradually became conceited again. I was very fat back then, and thought that was the reason for not having love. Later, I lost weight and still had no love, so I was lost for a while. Later, I finally figured it out, and everything suddenly became clear. I have hurt a very good friend, and I have arbitrarily expanded the damage of a friend. The closer people are, the easier it is to get hurt. Whether the injured or the injured person, it is a huge pain, as long as you really care. Mary hadn't seriously considered Max's feelings, and when she knew, it was a big mistake. After being forgiven, she really understood Max, understood the preciousness of their friendship, and truly accepted herself like this, not perfect, but acceptable and understandable.

Seems a little off topic? It's too late to sleep~

PS: It's friendship between them. Love is exclusive, aggressive, disguised, emotional, and intense, but friendship is only about understanding and trust. No matter how long I haven't contacted you, I know you are there, you are nothing but human.

PS&S: A lot of details at the end, very special special tearjerker. For example, the book of comparison expressions in Max's arms, such as the hairball on his head, such as the letter on the wall, such as the fish in the tank. Everything, such a delicate, sensitive heart, and such a sincere friendship

PS&S&S: I guess my friends can't read this text, but I still want to say, thank you for accommodating my imperfections. I think, you know what I'm talking about :P

Mary and Max quotes

  • Max Jerry Horovitz: Butts are bad because they wash out to sea, and fish smoke them and become nicotine-dependent. I am just joking, because of course it is impossible for a cigarette to remain lit underwater. Also, fish do not have pockets to keep cigarette lighters in.

  • Max Jerry Horovitz: [to Mary] Have you ever been a communist? Have you ever been attacked by a crow or similar large bird?
