A little bit about how the film was shot and on the equipment

I have long been interested in TV news photography, so I can contribute some information about the shooting equipment and shooting techniques of this film.

First, let's talk about how the film was shot. Everyone knows that this is a "pseudo-documentary" that seems to be unedited, a machine imitating TV news. Many people complained that the picture was too messy, too shaken, and scolded the cameraman for his poor skills. This is a big injustice to the cameraman. We all know that the reason why the regular movie is stable is because of the extensive use of professional stabilization equipment such as handheld stabilizers, tripods, rockers, and slide rails. And the movie "Death Video" itself uses the method of shooting news in a harsh environment, and it is completed at one time. In the plot, when the cameraman is shooting with the camera, just walking quickly will cause a large amount of camera shake, even if his stabilization skills are superb. After entering the building, the plot of the movie officially started, and there were more unfavorable factors affecting him. The police and quarantine officers kept trying to stop him from filming, followed the crowd in the building running constantly, the chaotic scene, the tension, and it was fortunate that the filming could proceed smoothly under such circumstances. Pushing the lens to the telephoto end from time to time can seriously destabilize the lens. Even in the back, being constantly attacked by zombies, the cameraman can keep calm and shoot extremely professionally, which is already quite admirable. When the film was actually shot, the cameraman only had a very small "Steadicam", and it was not surprising that it was shaking. The sense of realism and tension of this shaking is not deliberate, but naturally generated by this shooting technique. Picture stability and real chaos, you can only choose one of the two. However, the radio does use a boom microphone.

As for the shooting equipment, in addition to the night vision lens, I used a Panasonic HVX200, P2 card, DVCPRo professional handheld camera. High-definition recording indicators, one-third of an inch three CCD photoreceptors. The location is a TV camera. The film is also directly recorded using P2 card, no DVCPro tape is used. Since Panasonic's machine doesn't have an infrared night camera function, I used a Sony compact HDV to shoot the last few minutes.

At the end, I added a few words about the characters' opinions. Many people scolded the characters in the film "one match and the other", and scolded the heroine for constantly screaming and hurting her teammates. I just want to say number one, when people face that kind of extreme fear environment, these behaviors are normal. Second, this is not a "zombie drama" like Resident Evil, its focus lies in the real thriller rather than the blood scene. I have a lot of admiration for the female reporter and videographer duo. The professionalism of the cameraman goes without saying. In the face of such a change, the female reporter never thought to hide, but kept trying to get close to the first live report, and was still interviewing when she stopped. They are able to do this not only because of their extraordinary courage, but also because of the journalists' heartfelt desire to seek the truth and a high degree of self-forgetfulness. The female reporter's beauty and courage coexist, and the cameraman's technology and calmness coexist. Gotta give them both a thumbs up!

REC quotes

  • Ángela: [to Pablo, before interviewing a fireman] If this is a pain in the ass, just cut, okay?

  • Álex: People think we run around, putting out fires but around 70% of the calls we get are for other types of services.

    Ángela: Like what?

Álex: For example, broken water mains, or pet rescue too. Even though it sounds cliché, it's true.
