Mud - 8/10

This is the first time I have seen director Jeff Nichols's film, and I like his style very much. Such independent low-budget films often have the strongest expression of real life. The story of the film is simple, but it is told vividly with ups and downs. The friendship and chemistry between the two little boys and the protagonist Mud reminds me of the movie Stand By Me, (the little boy Neckbone even resembles River Phoenix), and like Stand By Me, the three protagonists in this film are all eye-catching . If a bad man can make a girl grow into a woman, then what this film is about is the price it takes for a boy to grow into a man. When the protagonist Ellis said Can you be my girlfriend, there were bursts of laughter in the theater. There was no doubt that this was the audience's ruthless ridicule of a little boy's naivety, but who could understand him? Courage and sincerity? In the face of love, men are born later than women. Often when you say goodbye to your innocence, you truly learn to give up.

The collapse, empathy, and destruction of patriarchy. In the world of boys, good and evil are distinct, but in the world of adults, there is no clear boundary between good and evil. The same is the southern United States. Compared with the beasts of the southern country and the boy who deliver the newspapers, the depiction of the harsh nature and the creation of an atmosphere of suspense are downplayed, but the fate of the characters has a more direct connection with this land. In the barbaric world, only by becoming more barbarous can it be possible to survive.

Both adults and children are growing up, and facing all aspects of love, they will have a deep understanding after experiencing it.

Mud quotes

  • Neckbone: I knew it. I told you that dirty son of a bitch was trouble. Did you tell them where he is?

Ellis: No, that's why I called you. He needs to know people are looking for him.

Neckbone: You think he doesn't know that already? Jesus, Ellis! Why do you even think he's on that island?

Neckbone: Ellis, I'm serious! We don't know who this guy is.

Ellis: He loves her, Neck. He told me.

Neckbone: I don't give a shit who he loves!

  • Ellis: He's not dangerous.

Neckbone: [sighs] Sounds like a shitload of state troopers thinks differently.
