What is reconciliation?
Some say reconciliation is growth. Stop teasing!
Reconciliation is accepting the fact that you are weak, pitiful and helpless but able to eat.
The film "The Seventh Seal" is a reconciliation between director and screenwriter Ingmar Bergman and "Fear of Death".
Everyone is mortal, and everyone must fear.
The eighty-two minutes and thirty-nine seconds of the movie are the key moments to understand the movie.
The knight makes a choice, he chooses to die himself and let others live.
The film must answer two questions before the critical moment arrives.
First, how did the Cavaliers get into a life-or-death dilemma?
Second, why did the knight sacrifice his life to save others?
After the critical moment, the movie will reveal the consequences of the knight's choice.
Everything the director does is to express a point of view: "The fear of death is invincible."
Translated into vernacular it is:
"Dear viewers, are you afraid of death?
If you are afraid, you can feel at ease after watching my movie.
Because fear is useless. "
In order to avoid falling into the preaching error of shouting slogans, Bergman made this "Seventh Seal". He uses the entire film as an argument to demonstrate this point.
The movie's protagonist, "The Knight," challenges his fear of death three times.
At the beginning, he actually had the upper hand by virtue of his wisdom. Helpless, in the face of fear, wisdom can only be that "receiving hair" encounters a right hook.
Wisdom was KO in the first round
Next, the knight seeks salvation by faith.
Talk to the knight about faith? It really is a pot that can't be opened without mentioning it!
He was already facing a crisis of belief, and he made three moves and two gestures. Still fear prevails.
In the second round, Faith was labeled as Faith Collapse.
The knight's last straw is to give meaning to death. For example, he decided to escort the Joker family before he died.
Before he died, he guarded the beauty of the world, and he could be considered dead.
In addition, the knight wants to inquire about God's news with the god of death after death.
Death is also a god.
God's secret, since mortals cannot spy on it, then God should know it.
Even if the secret cannot be leaked to mortals, the knight is no longer a human being after death, and he can always ask the god of death to talk about it.
unexpectedly.
The clown's natural yin and yang eyes force the knight into the predicament of saving himself or others.
The Joker saw Death and the knight playing chess, so he took his wife and children to escape.
Eighty-two minutes and thirty-nine seconds of the movie, at this moment, the knight's life is shortened by one point for every move that Death makes. If the knight stops the game, the clown family will surely die.
The knight ultimately chose to sacrifice himself because he wanted to give death a double meaning.
One is to protect the beauty of the world with life, and the other is to die as a martyr.
With the blessings of these two righteousnesses, the knight thought that he could not fear life and death.
What followed, however, was reality.
The knight saved three people but killed five others, including his wife who had waited ten years for him.
The family fled, but his wife kept the fire in the fireplace for him to disperse the cold when he returned home. Wife's loyalty is exchanged for death.
Self-sacrifice was not worth the gain, and what made the knight more regretful was that he wanted to prove the existence of God with death.
However, the answer he got was Death's denial of God.
In the end, the knight can only accept the reality. When the crowd greeted Death, the knight cried and prayed in the shadows.
So far, Bergman has demonstrated his point of view, and at the same time completed his reconciliation with "fear of death".
"The Seventh Seal", we'll stop here.
