Story Summary 2

In the morning, a middle-aged man with sunglasses suddenly appeared in the Manhattan station. It happened that an old lady beside him was robbed of her bag and fell to the ground. The security thought it was the middle-aged man who robbed it. The man came from nowhere, had no luggage on him, and behaved strangely. Security determined that the man was abnormal and sent him to the Manhattan Psychiatric Center.

At the center, doctor Mark is communicating with patient Ernie. Ernie is always afraid that the polluted environment will lead to her death. A mysterious middle-aged man was sent to Mark. The assistant told him that the man was in good health, but could not find any information about his identity.
The middle-aged man, calling himself Prot, came from a planet called K-PAX and came to Earth using a beam of light. Mark asked a few questions about how to get to this planet, and Prot gave impeccable answers.
In the patient lounge, Howie, who suffers from OCD, asked Prot about K-PAX. They learned that there were two suns on K-PAX.

Mark returns home. He has a beautiful wife and two lovely daughters. Obviously the pressure at work has left Mark with no time to take care of his family.

Mark returns to the treatment center and meets Sal in the elevator who thinks everything stinks. Mark played the recorded conversation with Prot to all the doctors in the treatment center. He expressed his interest in the patient and did not want to diagnose him quickly.
Second time talking to Prot. Prot told about their reproduction on their planet. Succession is just a biological process. Prot said his experience of this trip to Earth will be recorded in the report.
Prot met more patients in the patient lounge. Bess, who is taciturn, has not spoken since his home was destroyed by fire; Mrs. Doris, who has never been out of the ward, always seems to be waiting for the person in her heart to have a romantic dinner.
Mark's assistant has a new discovery, Prot's eyes are very sensitive to light, he can see ultraviolet light, so he never takes off his sunglasses. Mark draws the curtains in the office. Prot took off his sunglasses and started the third conversation. Prot said that there are no concepts of family, marriage, etc. on K-PAX planet. No law, no society. He in turn criticized the so-called morality or religion of mankind.

Family reunion at Mark's house. Mark's sister persuaded Mark to visit Michael, the son he had with his ex-wife. For various reasons, they haven't spoken for a long time. Mark tells his brother-in-law, Steve, who is an astronomer, about Prot. Steve listed some questions for Mark and told him to ask Prot to see if he could answer them, to see if they were real or not.

Neglect finds Howie acting weird, just staring out the window. Howie tells Mark that Prot told him that as long as he finds the bluebird and completes three tasks, he will be able to heal himself.

Outside the window, Prot was teaching Ernie to breathe the air outside. Mark gets angry and tells Prot that it's their doctor's job to heal and you're just a patient. Prot handed Mark full of answers to the questions.
Steve told Mark that Prot's answer about K-PAX's position in space was very accurate, involving data that only a few scientists knew. He suggested taking Prot to the Institute for Space Research for further inquiries.
Mark repeatedly listened to the tape of the conversation with Prot, and vaguely found himself growing estranged from his wife and daughter.
Prot came to the Institute of Space Research, answered all the questions posed by the scientists, and drew almost exactly the orbit of the K-PAX planet on the 3D map of the galaxy, leaving the audience speechless.

Ernie saw bluebirds. This made all the patients in the patient lounge very happy. Even Mrs. Doris came out the door. At night, Bess, who has almost never spoken, told Prot that you are actually the blue bird.

Sal finds Prot and begs him to take him to his planet because he just can't stand the treatment he's received here. Prot said he would take but only one person when he left.
The news reached all the patients. Mark was surprised that Prot would "leave". Prot also told the exact date of his departure.
At night, Mark woke up from his sleep and suddenly figured out that the moment Prot left was exactly 4 years after the moment he said he came to Earth. He concluded that something must have happened on that day four years ago. Working in the middle of the night annoyed Mark's wife.

Mark invited Prot to his house as a guest. He found that Prot had the emotions that any normal person would have. Prot talks to Mark's wife and finds out about Michael. When Prot pushed Mark's daughter on the swing, the automatic sprinkler next to him alarmed him, making him suddenly mad and almost hurting Mark's daughter.

After this incident, Mark concluded that Prot was not an alien. He asked his superiors to give him more time, through hypnosis, to find out what happened that day four years ago, which hurt him and made such a big change.
Prot disappeared for a few days. The patients said he went to Iceland and Greenland. No matter how the treatment center looked for him, he couldn't find it. Then Prot reappears, much to Mark's annoyance. Mark persuades Prot to undergo hypnotherapy.
Through hypnosis, Prot still says he's from K-PAX and made a friend in a slaughterhouse in a village on Earth. When his friend needed him, he came to his friend's side, experienced the death of his father with him, and watched the stars together.

The patients are packing up to go to K-PAX with Prot. Prot recommends that everyone write an article explaining why they want K-PAX, and choose through these articles. This event is run by Howie.

In the second hypnosis, Prot said that his friend later married a wife named Sarah and gave birth to a daughter named Rebecca.
The nurse reported that Howie attempted to strangle Ernie. Ernie was not afraid at all, but she no longer feared death and recovered. Howie said it was one of three tasks. There is one more task he can heal himself.
The time is getting closer and closer to the date of Prot's "departure". The third time under hypnosis, Prot said his friend committed suicide by jumping into a river. As soon as the names of Sarah and Rebecca were mentioned, Prot went into a state of madness, very painful. In the confusion, he dropped the pencil he usually used to take notes.
On the train home, Mark stumbles upon Prot's pencil. Find the area code 505, and the words SAL on the pencil. Based on these clues, he found a village in New Mexico, and found the man named Robert who committed suicide through the local newspaper. Mark rushed to the place and learned that Robert's wife Sarah and daughter Rebecca had been raped and murdered one after another. When Robert returned home, he saw that he jumped into the river and committed suicide.

Everything is clear. Mark felt sorry for his wife.

The night before Prot is "leaving", Mark makes it clear to Prot that he knows his true identity. But Prot said the trip to Earth made him feel emotional. Also, I could be Robert, or I could be from K-PAX.
The patient held a farewell meeting for Prot and handed in his own essay. Prot told Howie that the last task is to stay, be ready, and take care of everything.
Mark plans to stay up all night with his wife coming to accompany her husband. Mark still fell asleep. Nurses monitor this Prot. The next day, a ray of sunlight shone into Prot's room. Mark and the others rushed to the room to find Prot passed out. The patients found that Bess was gone. Prot had actually left, they said, and he chose to take homeless Bess to K-PAX.
Prot, aka Robert, became a catatonic psychopath who couldn't speak or wouldn't speak. Mark, however, gave Robert an update on the condition of the "recovered" patient. Who knows, maybe they really recovered.
