Text/Max didn't expect you to be such a mummy
Hong Kong, I always thought that "The New Mummy" was impossible to rot.
But the unforgiving reality poured cold water on me.
Why reboot The Mummy?
All the officials, let me talk about the changing pattern of the six major Hollywood Studios in recent years, slap! (It's gavel's voice).
We usually refer to the six major studios, which refer to the six giant studios of Disney, Warner, Universal, 20th Century Fox, Paramount and Sony, and the power rankings of these six are also rotated by feng shui.
In recent years , Disney has basically held the position of the leader due to its heavy arms (Marvel superheroes, Star Wars series, Pixar animation, Disney animation, fairy tale live-action version five IPs), and Disney derivatives and parks are blooming all over the world . All the heroes are afraid.
And today's protagonist is Universal (Universal) , what kind of film company is this?
If it was placed five years ago, Universal was also the bottom of the game. Basically, it was a loss for one film , and few films made money.
But in 2013, suddenly Comcast announced the acquisition of Universal Pictures.
What's up with Comcast? To put it more vividly, it is the "China Telecom + China Mobile" in the United States, which is a big local tyrant!
It is said that the power of capital is infinite , so Universal Pictures, which has a history of 100 years, blossomed overnight and launched an ambitious all-out attack on Disney's leading position.
Disney: I'm building Disneyland in Shanghai.
Universal: I am building Universal Studios in Beijing.
Disney: I have Mickey Mouse.
Universal: I have Minions.
Disney: I rely on "Star Wars" to sell feelings.
Universal: I reboot Jurassic World.
Disney: I want to quickly occupy the Chinese market.
Universal: First ask "Fast and Furious 8" if it will answer.
Disney: I opened up the superheroes and built the Marvel universe.
Universal: I...then I have to think...
So everyone found out that Universal is still a sigh of relief, it is a "universe" that has opened up multiple IPs . It can be said that building their own "universe" is a compulsory course for the six major film companies in recent years.
However, compared to other "DC Universe", "X-Men Universe" and so on, which are all dead on a tree of superheroes , Universal has cleverly taken a different approach and decided to build a Dark Universe composed of classic monsters. Vampires, werewolves, Frankenstein, and more all in one universe.
In addition to Tom and Russell Crowe, the first-line big names who have joined at present , Johnny Depp, Angelina Jolie, Charlize Theron, Michael Fassbender and Javier Bardem are also coming soon Participate in the upcoming works of Dark Universe.
Universal has a long tradition of making monster movies.
Since the 1930s, the world's first pot of gold has come from the monsters mentioned above.
Dracula, Werewolf, Frankenstein, Mummy, Invisible Man... These classic characters that everyone is familiar with, began to become popular from this time, and eventually swept the world.
Of course, the most familiar to Chinese audiences is the "Mummy" trilogy that began in 1999, also from Universal.
Needless to say, the style obviously draws on the successful elements of "Indiana Jones" "thriller + funny ratio" , and it has become one of the most popular adventure series.
I am a fan of "The Mummy". Although the third part is bad , I have watched the first two over and over again.
So when I knew that "The Mummy" was going to be restarted, or Tom Cruise would be starring, I had to incorporate all the other monsters, not to mention how much I looked forward to~
The biggest change in this reboot is that all the stories have been moved to the contemporary era.
So I immediately figured out the highlight of the "Zombie World War" in which the human army stormed the mountain of corpses and the sea of corpses, hoo hoo hoo! Niubi!
Another expectation I have for "The New Mummy" is that the actor of the mummy this time is the "Blade Girl" Sophia Boutella who left a deep impression on the audience in "Ace Agent" .
"Led by Tommy + gorgeous special effects + stunning female mummy + full of confidence in the dark universe" , "The New Mummy" seems to be an impossible movie to fail.
Of course! Goose!
Next, I want to talk about the three things that made me most uncomfortable after watching "The Mummy" (there are some spoilers below)
1
The biggest problem with this film is that the style is seriously inconsistent.
It can be seen that Universal's tone for the dark universe is adult, but it doesn't want to completely abandon the comedy elements of the previous "Mummy Trilogy", and it has to forcefully add Tom's super-powerful elements, and finally make it a style. Kind of nondescript.
Several scenes felt like watching a zombie movie rather than an adventure movie.
Especially the scene where the mummy was attacked in the London sewers was so frightened that many female audience members in the cinema screamed.
Of course, it doesn't mean that it can't be made into a horror movie, but horror movies have the way of making horror movies, and the atmosphere needs to be coherent.
And what affects the coherence of the atmosphere the most in this film is the superfluous second male.
The setting of the second male is Tom's funny good friend. After being bitten by the camel spider in the mummy's tomb, he turns into a zombie and kills people on the plane. Then he appears in the form of a ghost (or hallucination?) to tell bad jokes.
It can be seen that the script is very unclear about its positioning. If it's a comedy guy, it's really unpleasant for him to kill people; if it's to show his blackness, then he didn't do more bad things later.
The second female also has the same problem. The role change makes no sense. At first, it was the archaeologist who slept with Tom. I don't know which scene started to really fall in love with Ah Tang. In the end, the two suddenly fell in love with each other. (literally dead and alive), it makes people look inexplicable.
The whole film is also immersed in such a dramatic atmosphere, as if two screenwriters are fighting for a pen to write the script.
2
The second more serious problem is the lack of big scenes.
As an ambitious work with a big investment, how can the audience buy it without a big scene in the end? I think the lowest rating for a blockbuster is "all the good stuff is in the trailer" .
There is a set of pictures in the trailer. The female mummy Princess Emmanet casts a spell in London, setting off a wild sand, and then the face composed of the sandstorm is obviously a tribute to the old version of "The Mummy".
and then? I told you in the feature film, and then there is no more... I didn't see the scene in "Zombie World War" at all!
And in the third act, which was supposed to be the climax, everyone went to a dark tomb. There was no big scene, and even the picture could not be seen clearly.
And at the moment, my mind is full of the magnificent scenes of the "Mummy Trilogy" in which thousands of troops and horses swallowed thousands of miles like a tiger ... Isn't watching a blockbuster just a picture, why are you showing me this?
3
Finally, the most unbearable part of this film is that Sofia Boutella is made ugly.
To declare in advance, it is definitely not to say that if you don't look good, you are ugly . Potra's previous work is the best example.
In "Kingsman," her character had no lower legs, but instead had prosthetic limbs with sharp blades. Not only has it not become ugly, but the cool leg knife action scene is as handsome as a gymnast, which is extremely amazing.
In "Star Trek: Beyond the Stars", the alien female warrior she plays is also very non-mainstream, but her tugging personality and sharp stick skills are still endearing.
Baotra herself is a master dancer, so she has a natural advantage in acting in action scenes. In addition, with her almost perfect body proportions and a very exotic face, this female mummy could have been beautiful and flimsy.
At the beginning of the movie, she is indeed beautiful, and her eye makeup is breathtaking.
and then? The mid-transition isn't fully human yet, so forget it.
After inhaling human essence and returning to human form, he could show off his hands, legs, soft body and beauty, but he was caught and tied up in a very shameful posture for a long time!
It's really a waste of money ! Director, do you really like this shameful play? Shame! Shame on YOU!
To be honest, this pioneering work in the dark universe has not lived up to popular expectations, and it will have no small impact on the entire series. Just imagine that if "Iron Man 1" was a big bad movie, there may be nothing to do with Marvel.
But then again, "the power of capital is infinite" , I still have expectations for the next works. If it doesn't work, think about DC's superheroes. Isn't it on the right track a little bit now?
Okay, not much more to say, I have to go back and re-brush "The Mummy" in 1999 , Keke~
