In fact, I have wanted to write a review about Maeve for a long time. After watching the second season, I feel that Maeve's character image is more full. In the first season, she and Otis mentioned her drug addict mother and mentally unstable brother. It is conceivable that as a high school student, it may have been difficult for her to feel a stable and happy life, which is why she helps her classmates write essays and cooperates with Otis to open a clinic. Maeve is very smart, she knows how to make money to support herself and how to get out of a relationship without getting hurt.
Speaking of Maeve's literary level, in fact, it can be seen from S1 that Maeve actually loves reading and writing, and you can always see Maeve reading scenes in the play. Maeve is a person who longs for love and rejects love. She wants to get her mother's love but is afraid that her mother will abandon her again, so she can only lower her expectations again and again. As for relationships, when Maeve finally realized that he liked Otis, he found that Otis already had a girlfriend. The two could only miss it again.
When watching the drama, I actually hoped that the screenwriter would give Maeve a normal family, that she would not have to write essays for others because of livelihood issues, and that she would be well-received for her essays in her own name. Her upbringing reminds me of Cornell, the male protagonist in the British drama "Normal People". Both of them like literary works.
