"Daddy Judge": A little digression

There are countless movies about law and crime because when we talk about the law, we are also talking about human nature and the bottom line of morality. Humanity, an old-fashioned word, is the eternal theme of film and television works.

"Daddy Judge" is excellent. As you can imagine, a cake blank is carefully brushed with a thin layer of cream, and the corners are decorated with intricate and delicate lace. The pastry chef decorated the cake with fruit, chocolate, jelly beans…

Family affection is the background color, and the evolution of the contradiction between father and son is the emotional line. In the complex network of characters, we weave the conflicts of different ideas, and then use the form of law to discuss the super concepts of "justice" and "fairness", and settle on the classic vocabulary of "human nature". This is the impression that "Father Judge" brought me, and the screenwriter's skills are very solid. Although I just watched this movie on a whim because of Robert Downey Jr. I didn't step on the thunder this time, hahaha.

The specific content can no longer be expanded. Writing this article, I want to use "Dad Judge" as an incision to make a little digression. Law, I'm a layman, but I'm a layman interested in law.

I often wonder, what is the vocation of a lawyer?

The answer is: to safeguard the legitimate rights and interests of the parties by legal means. Note that in this sentence, "legal" is emphasized twice before and after. Just like the classic line in "Dad Judge": "The law is the only thing that makes people equal", and everyone should respect it.

So what about the image of the lawyer "Hank" in the movie?

He seems to deviate a bit from the image that a lawyer should have, because he has always paid more attention to making money before, thinking that what lawyers pursue is to win lawsuits and emphasize the performance of lawyers. What I want to say here is that we should make a distinction between "morality" and "law". Hank's series of actions did not violate the law, but it can only be said that he violated the spirit of "fairness" on the moral level.

To judge whether a person is a "bad person", we need to add the elements of moral concepts and social public opinion; but to judge whether a person is a "sinner", only the law can judge. Therefore, we must face up to the behavior of "lawyers defending bad people", and we must not be prejudiced against it. Many people have heard a saying called "threatening to lure witnesses into perjury". The key point is that the word "inducing" is not easy to judge. To put it bluntly, it can be regarded as "inducing confession". Who is the one who often induces confession? Often the judiciary. If the judiciary will not be punished for soliciting a confession, but the lawyer will be punished for soliciting a confession, which is obviously an inequality of legislation. Because in essence, the mission of lawyers and the judiciary is the same. One is to crack down on crimes through strictly applicable laws, and the other is to safeguard the legal rights of criminal suspects by legal means. The two complement each other, and both work tirelessly to build a country ruled by law.

The judge's father broke the law, and the lawyer's son defended it. I feel that "Daddy Judge" can completely lengthen the content and express it in the form of episodes. Because of its large size, there is room for detailed description and in-depth excavation of the connotation of subtle places. In terms of such a complex spiritual connotation, the genre of film is a little rushed.

With the passage of time, when it comes to the concept of "equality" again, we should not tremble. It is precisely because it has exploded with great destructive power over the past hundred years that we should look at it more seriously. It is prejudice to regard "equality" as the culprit that belittles freedom and obliterates rationality; it is disregard to keep silent about the practical significance and social value of "equality". It has to be said that at the moment, "equality" may be our last straw; to give equality another chance is to give ourselves another chance.

The Judge quotes

  • Samantha Powell: Dammit, Hank. I loved you then and I love you now. I do. I love how you are simultaneously the most selfish and the most generous person I know. I love how you hate a bully while being one. But your constant second-guessing of others, that crystal-ball bullshit? That hyperverbal vocabulary-vomit thing that you do? I disappeared around you, Hank.

    Hank Palmer: Say it again.

    Samantha Powell: All of it?

  • Samantha Powell: Whatever had or hadn't happened in the past, I was gonna be the hero of my own story.
