Scarface General Paul, instigated by General George, orders his troops to attack the Anthill in order to add a star to himself. The German anthill defense line has been unable to be attacked for two years. Paul went to the front line to patrol. Every time he encountered a soldier, he would ask: "Are you ready to kill more Germans?" S was forced to agree under threat. In the middle of the night, Roger, LeJune and the lieutenant went out to investigate together. The lieutenant was drunk and fled and threw a grenade to kill LeJune by mistake, and then warned Roger to keep quiet. The attack started the next day, and the French army retreated steadily. One battalion did not leave the trench due to serious casualties. General Paul ordered the artillery captain Rousseau to attack his camp. The order was repeatedly rejected, and the raid ended in failure. Paul asked Dax to choose three soldiers in order to dump the blame (Fro, Roger - Lieutenant chose him with a grudge, Arnold) and accused them of cowardice, Dax stood up and defended his soldiers fully (the climax of the film, this Duan reminds me of "Captain Sully" I watched not long ago, the climax of the film is not set at the scene of the disaster, but at the hearing), but the makeshift court is full of Paul's people, and the three soldiers are found guilty and shot the next day . The priest in the prison came to repent for the three. Arnault believed that the priest was hypocritical and beat the priest. Roger punched him unconscious, and Fro kept crying and didn't want to die. Dax asked the lieutenant to be the executioner for this execution, when the artillery captain Rousseau came to report that General Paul ordered the bombardment of his own people. Dax hurriedly found General George and forced him to save people by exposing the incident, but he did not know that General George was more vicious and insidious. The three were eventually shot and Paul was to be investigated. George offered to replace Paul with Dax, but Dax refused. George asked, "What did I do wrong?" Dax replied, "Because you don't know the answer to that question." Dax heard cheers from the soldiers in front of the tavern, and it was a German woman who was about to perform a singing ( From the beginning to the end of the film, only this German appeared), and everyone started booing very loudly. The woman's singing infected everyone present. Although they did not understand the language, in the end everyone hummed along, crying while humming.

If the hypocritical bureaucracy has corrupted ideals and justice, and living human lives are only pawns for balancing interests, can idealists have a way out in front of the huge state apparatus? A ballad with a language barrier can still make the vulgar and cruel soldiers cry. "Just ask who hasn't spoken yet" only makes netizens complain that the reality of the struggle prevents them from chasing the opera. History is just repeating itself or even going backwards. Where did it come from? Spiral upward. Kubrick's final hope still failed. (Author: Cement)

Kubrick was not yet 30 years old when he made this film, but the pungent satire of war has already been drawn into it, and the old ghost temperament is unmistakable.

Paths of Glory quotes

  • Colonel Dax: How many casualties do you expect, sir?

General Mireau: Say 5 five percent killed by our own barrage. Ten percent more getting through No Man's Land and 20 percent more getting through the wire. Say another 25 percent in actually taking the Anthill and we're still left with a force more than adequate to hold it...

  • Colonel Dax: Let me get this straight, sir. You're offering me General Mireau's command?

General Broulard: Come, come, Colonel Dax. Don't overdo the surprise. You've been after the job from the start. We all know that, my boy.

Colonel Dax: I may be many things, sir, but I am not your boy.

General Broulard: Well, I certainly didn't mean to imply any biological relationship.
