Dawkins' book "The Selfish Gene" says that collectives, nations, or nations are shaped to allow some individuals to voluntarily sacrifice their lives to preserve the continuation of the racial gene. Selfishness is the nature of genes, and it is also the nature of the two generals, French society, and war in this film. War is inherently injustice, no matter how advertised it is. The ending is particularly impressive, the reality is cruel, how can there be so much family fun!
In the film, the colonel can be described as an angel. He does not hesitate to fight against his immediate superiors, refuses to be promoted by high-level executives, and is compassionate to his subordinates. Combined with the folk song at the end of the German Guliang that made French soldiers cry, it interprets hope, and only those who have hope can live.
The protagonist is Michael Douglas' father, handsome!
