The only thing that matters is the ending , it is the most important part in a story
. Life is the same. So so many people care about the ending, to a degree that many people can't understand, like Annie in "Ten Days of Dangerous Love", and John in this film. Because they regard the story as life, the ending is related to the end of their own destiny, so they will stop at nothing to intervene in that ending, just like people in the world desperately chasing the result, in the end, how many lives and stories are there respectively? It's all a desperate struggle that has already come to an end.
I don't feel the story as strongly as Hide and Seek. The details are relatively rough. Of course, this is related to the arrangement and layout of the storytelling, but I think it is mainly because many things are very deliberate. Take the character setting as an example, John's appearance is very conceptual. He has no background, and he appears and leaves mysteriously, only as a representative of a character symbol, which is understandable in itself, but his appearance and departure are too abrupt and harmonious. Deliberately, and his black hat, it all makes the element of horror a conceptual symbol of horror for terror, just like John himself. The setting of the plot is not delicate, and the suspense setting of the film is mainly carried out from two lines. One is the contradiction and conflict between Rainey and his wife and his wife's lover, and the other is the struggle with the stranger John Huett about the ownership of the novel. Undoubtedly, the second line is the main line. Contradiction and suspense escalate in the intersection of these two lines. It is conceivable that the director hopes that these two lines will be perfectly blended, but obviously, this intention has not been well realized. The essential reason is that the details are not carefully selected, which leads to the deliberate and conceptualization of the whole. Of course, this does not affect the psychological feelings of most viewers when they watch this film, but if you scrutinize it deeply, there are still some discounts.
Still, I liked the story itself. At the end of the film we see that everything is just a play directed and acted by Renee, without John, it is just the embodiment of his own evil side. He was caught in the revenge of his wife's cheating and couldn't extricate himself. Coupled with the exhaustion of writing inspiration and unhappy childhood memories, his personality was split. On the one hand, he is a weak man, on the other hand, he has become a demon because of his mental morbidity. What we finally see is not the so-called killing for life, but a dramatic ending. At the same time as the end of the life of his wife and her lover, Rainey believes that a good ending for "Mystery Window" was born, and the living Death has become a secret. I like this kind of self-deprecating attitude towards life that is a bit dark and humorous, which is often revealed in Stephen King's novels.
Having said that, after all, this is a successful commercial film, we do not need to be too harsh.
