Desire, violence, suspense, all in just a few minutes! ???
This is a classic erotic movie that has been imitated but never surpassed. Watching this film more than ten years ago, I probably only saw the word "pornography", or more deeply, and also saw the contest between intelligence and desire between men and women. Looking back ten years later, I suddenly understand the deep meaning of the film's title "Instinct".
In the face of instinct, reason is easy to lose, because that is what genes bring.
When the murder happened, Nick was suspicious of the flamboyant female writer, Katherine. Although Catherine passed the polygraph test later, Nick, relying on the police intuition, still did not relax the investigation of Catherine. But then, when Nick meets the suspect in bed, he falls. He basked in good feelings and said she was the best mate in the world, regardless of whether she was a femme fatale.
What's even more ridiculous is that Nick, who had violent tendencies, was provoked by Catherine and finally killed his girlfriend and psychiatrist with a gun. The girlfriend had tried her best to treat the mental illness of the man she loved, but she forgot:
The real disease is human instinct and cannot be cured at all.
This may be director Paul Verhoeven's profound and hopelessly pessimistic understanding of human nature. Human instinct comes from genes. Sometimes you don't see it at work. Once there is external stimulation, it will bark its fangs and pull you into the quagmire of desire and violence. ?
Katherine, played by Sharon Stone, is beautiful, lustful and brainy, and she is always above men. It also seems to let us see the director's tribute to the intelligent, elegant and mysterious woman. ?
