Das weiße Band – Eine deutsche Kindergeschichte (2009)

Continue to watch the Palme d’Or Award-winning film. The film won the Palme d'Or at the 62nd Cannes Film Festival.

The film tells the memories of an old man, reminiscing about strange events in the village where he lived before the First World War. The plot of the film is very trivial, mainly about the following things:

1. The village doctor tripped over a hidden rope while riding a horse and was seriously injured and was admitted to the hospital.

2. Under the assignment of the baron of the village big landlord, a peasant woman died in an accident while working.

3. The baron’s vegetable plot was destroyed on a celebration day due to the revenge of the peasant woman’s son.

4. The baron's son disappeared while playing with other children in the village and was beaten.

5. The boy of the Baron Butler did not like the newborn boy, and opened the window late at night and got sick with the boy.

6. The baron’s farm was set on fire in the middle of the night.

7. Because the whole family was expelled by the baron, the husband of the peasant woman hanged himself in his own home and died.

8. The doctor had an affair with the midwife, but after the doctor recovered and returned home, he began to hate the midwife and did not have any relationship with her.

9. A doctor who can't solve his physical needs molested his daughter in the middle of the night.

10. The priest's daughter fainted when her father reprimanded her for dressing up, and after recovering, she killed the priest's beloved bird.

11. The mentally handicapped child of the midwife was injured when he was playing with other children.

12. While the baron’s son was playing the flute, the butler’s son snatched the flute and was pushed down the river.

13. The doctor's family and the mentally retarded child of the midwife disappeared at the same time, and the midwife went to the city in a panic.

The above are the main events that happened in the movie. In addition, there are some minor plots in the film, such as the relationship between the memoir and his fiancee, the innocent behavior of two simple boys, sibling relationships, etc., as well as the background of the outbreak of the First World War.

Through the plot of the movie, the film depicts a village full of revenge, resentment, cruelty, and indifference. In this village, there is a lack of trust among people, and the villagers have a strong mentality of revenge, and even the children are almost cruelly mature and have quite a city. In a nutshell, this village is full of "white fear" like the name of the movie, and it is a terrifying place that everyone wants to escape from. Therefore, the theme of this film is to show the evil side of human nature through the description of the film, including jealousy, revenge, indifference, sexual desire, rebellion, cruelty and so on. In addition, the film also shows the living conditions of German and Austrian farmers before the First World War, revealing the cause of the war from a deeper level.

Of course, if the theme of the film is to be extended, the childhood life of the Nazi youth can also be understood, but this is a long way off, because the story of the film has nothing to do with the Nazis. This is also the point that many people understand the film, but in my opinion it is an over-interpretation. The film is just to show the spirit and living conditions of German and Austrian farmers in that era, and to show some characteristics of the German nation, nothing more. Moreover, there are many other main reasons for the growth and growth of the Nazi Party, such as the economic crisis in the late 1920s, the malaise of Germany after the First World War, the rise of German nationalism, the weakness of the Weimar Republic, etc. The "white fear" of the film is quite ridiculous when it is associated with the Nazis. Of course, it cannot be denied that the children in the film will be the backbone of Nazi Germany twenty years later. It is just that these children grow up in the countryside, how much can they do?

That being the case, let's take a look at the characteristics of the Germanic people of the German nation. First of all, men of this nation are very powerful. Doctors can molest their daughters, and priests are like God at home; all women in the family are afraid of the master, whether it is the fiancée of the memory, the wife of the priest or the housekeeper, they are in front of the man. They are all in the same way. Secondly, the children of this nation are smart but cold. As long as they want to do, no threats can hinder them, whether it is a father's whip, a slap in the face, or religious punishment. Third, this nation advocates violence. You can see from the incidents in the film. As long as there are conflicts between people, they have to use violence to solve them and use extreme methods to hurt others, but they have never resolved it through communication. Fourth, although this nation believes in piety, they only believe in God according to their own ideas. For example, the boy's actions after suicide and the priest's accusation against the recaller. Both of them gave themselves relief from their beliefs according to their own ideas. . Fifth, this nation recognizes the difference in class, which is evident from the influence of the baron on the village. The above is the German national characteristics that the film focuses on. It can be seen that the description of the film is not much different from our understanding of the Germans.

In view of these national characteristics, we can know the deep-seated reason for the rapid war between Germany and Austria: can the general public not listen to the words of the two emperors of Germany and Austria? What's more, the people of this nation are full of violent genes, and they are all a society where men are in power, and they can find themselves a high-sounding reason in religion. Of course, these are my conjectures, but it is undeniable that the characteristics of the German nation are one of the reasons for the rapid war between Germany and Austria.

There are not many highlights in the filming, I can only say that the style and plot of the film are very coordinated. Because of the black-and-white scenes, silent scenes, slow shots, fixed camera positions, and desolate village scenes in the movie, the movie is icy, giving people a bone-chilling feeling. "White Fear" all speaks for itself.

Since this is a German movie and the actors are all children, I won't say much to the actors. For them, I only have an overall evaluation-all the actors in the film appropriately interpret each role, which makes the film look very real, and also makes the audience feel the horror atmosphere of the "panic" in the film.

in conclusion. This film is a movie with a deep metaphor. Although it looks very dull, procrastinating, and the plot is not attractive, but after learning about the relevant historical and cultural background, you will be surprised by the depth of the film. In short, this film is a good film that can bring people many thoughts. The winning film of the Palme d’Or finally has one I admire.
