When watching the movie, when I saw the hero John find the boundary of the city, I thought of the movie "The Truman World". Originally I didn't connect the two, but a similar scene in the film brought "Truman" to the forefront of my mind. The protagonists of these two films also face falsehood and lies. They give us another possibility to imagine - doubt. From this unfolding, we can doubt the authenticity of the world, life, and the reliability of relationships. When this doubt arises, I can't help but feel a great resistance and fear of its false nature. While watching this film, I also kept guessing what the final choice of the protagonist would be. He has John's memory. He lived John's life. Although he has the ability to change all this, because he knows it is all false, but will he throw all this known into the furnace and rebuild it? The film's ending clearly tells us that he didn't. He chose to continue the "scam". I've seen some critics think his behavior is a manifestation of human compromise. It's a matter of opinion. I think, firstly, this is his only choice; secondly, it is his best choice. As residents of dark city abducted by aliens, they don't actually know where they came from - this can be seen from doctor schreber's confession to John. I don't know where I came from, how do I get back? After John defeated all the aliens, John followed his heart and naturally thought of his lover Emma. While watching "dark city", I couldn't help thinking, how are we born to be human? Although I'm just a film noob, I still want to say that I appreciate this film. It is successful in creating an atmosphere of suspense and in developing the story. Might not be that successful, but at least I did get immersed in it while watching the movie. Especially in the opening part, the scene where John wakes up, the switching of every shot is just right, perfectly showing the confusion of the protagonist and hinting at the suffocation of the world. At least the tone is set. The story line is also very clear. The whole movie gave me a refreshing feeling. The character's behavior is in line with the character's image, except that the personality displayed by the protagonist John when he guesses his name against the window is inclined to be perverted and deviates from the protagonist's kind-hearted image. Perhaps in the context of the huge proposition - what is a human being?
