Each person's memory is unique and contains the secret code of the soul, which is one of the most important factors for me to become me. Only group memory, not individual memory, is strong, but also fragile, so it will be endangered. However, this also seems to be a sci-fi motif - evil aliens, all uniform and dominated by only one brain. Only in this setting, we kill them and exterminate them, will there be no psychological guilt.
At the end of the story, the sorrow of an alien reflects our fear of ourselves: when there is no you in other people's memories, you are equivalent to never exist.
