The male protagonist, John, lives in a city ruled and transformed by aliens. There is no day but night. I woke up in a trance of amnesia but was charged with serial murder. In the process of searching for memory, I discovered that the city was different from human beings one after another. The city that is always at night is like a building block. Mystery and the police chase.
On the way to find himself, John finally found out that everyone, including his own past and memories, are fictions, illusions, and the result of aliens instilling them in them. In the end, with the help of police detectives and doctors, John used the ability of aliens to destroy everything, reconstructed the world, and reunited with his wife whose memory had disappeared.
The film is in a dark and depressing atmosphere from beginning to end. Only a few explosions and fights relieve people a little. John and the police detective force the doctor to search for the "Sunshine Beach" that everyone remembers, but only find one. Zhang posters and the wall, the two worked together to smash the wall. They thought that there would be a real world outside, but outside the wall was a hopeless empty space and universe.
But in the end, John chose to destroy all the illusory "beautiful", which is what the aliens cannot understand. They think that the memory of human beings is the "soul", and these memories determine the behavior of all people. The aliens got and John The same memory is always confused, and it has only its appearance, and the body without thought is still a walking dead.
Cogito ergo sum.
The end of the film is an open ending, how the aliens abducted humans, and what happened to the earth in the memory of the past, no one knows, maybe the doctor once knew, but John obviously doesn't care anymore, he just wants to be with his wife Emma ( Anna) has the most authentic memory of the present, the clearest present moment.
And the rest of mankind, perhaps John as the savior will wake them up from their illusory beauty and live for themselves from now on;
Maybe John will continue to make up memories for them, after all, the truth is too cruel, and the beautiful fantasy may be more comfortable.
