Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy is definitely the movie with the strongest cast I've seen in 2020, bar none.
A few days ago, a great English novelist, John Le Carre, passed away. But I hadn't known this man before, nor had I read his work. While walking at night, I listened to Liang Wendao's new podcast about the life of John Le Carre and his spy novels, and I found it interesting that he actually worked at MI5 before he wrote the spy novels , so is it possible to boldly speculate that the reliability of the content inside is still very high. And because the background of another book "Long Days Left" I'm reading recently is the United Kingdom in the 1950s, a country that began to decline gradually after World War II, and the background of his novel happened to be that special period - the Cold War between the United States and the Soviet Union. , I'm more interested.
The movie is brilliant, there's no doubt about it, with big names and familiar faces. But after watching the whole movie, it was very depressing. After watching it for 20 minutes, I couldn't wait to recommend it to my friends. After reading it, I felt that I couldn't recommend such a depressing work to others. Lying in bed tossing and turning, what's going on, maybe because the theme is too dark? Because the plot is too violent? After all, it was the Cold War period, so how could you expect a cute story to happen? Some are just cheating, exploiting, lying, cheating, shooting, torture, and some are just the most horrific things that have ever happened in that horrific period. The whole movie shows the panic and misunderstandings of the people during the Cold War, and at the same time, it constantly recalls the happy scene at the Christmas party. Although everyone was not so close at that time, there was always a cheerful atmosphere, and everyone was still alive. The more beautiful things that happened in the past, the more it highlights the indifference and desolation of people's hearts. The organization "Disc", just like the United Kingdom in those days, is declining little by little. The title of the book is more appropriate to describe it, "Elegant Fall". Because this is a story about a betrayal, about an intelligence agency falling apart, the film chooses a very repressive narrative, and the characters in the play seem to be trying their best to restrain their emotions in order to maintain an elegant appearance. So depressing.
Maybe it's because of the adaptation, even a two hour movie is still too short, there are so many characters, and less time is given to everyone, so I can't really feel the inner workings of the characters, why they do this decision, why loyalty, and why betrayal, what are the considerations behind this. This caused me to get confused from time to time, and it also prevented me from putting myself in the role very well. So prepare to get up tomorrow morning to read the novel, looking forward to a deeper experience.
