I knew about this "Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy" several years ago, but I stopped watching it a few minutes ago, probably because the overall atmosphere of the film was rather dull. This time I watched it in two time periods.

Cold War Panic

Through the settings in the film, we learned that the UK during the Cold War was in an embarrassing position between the US and the Soviet Union. The top executives of the British "Circular Field" were all middle-aged and a little powerless. I think it was these two points that laid the foundation for the The emotional tone of the film is sad and melancholy.

Many movies are very dull at first, but there is a certain point that supports you to continue watching it, and the further you watch it, the better it will become; the same is true of the performances of many actors. It was calm at first, waiting to reach a certain limit, and suddenly gave the audience a shock.

The suspense of espionage

I have both of these feelings in this movie. A very simple thing, the failure of a mission led to the theme of "catching the traitor", but the key is, who is the traitor, this is a question. Every character, every scene, and every thing in the film is designed very delicately. At the beginning, every shot feels very trivial and boring, but slowly, looking back, you will find a trace of connection, and then Coupled with the "Christmas party" scene that Smiley recalled many times, we were attracted by the fog; then the actors, from the very beginning, Gary Oldman was quiet, and has been quiet, because Smiley is the mind Careful, he can find everyone's doubts; later, in front of Peter Quilling, he recalls Carla, the biggest enemy of "Circus Field", and his own worst enemy, this time, through facial expressions. In the close-up, I think there is less calmness and more (can't say specifically), I think Smiley and Carla are somewhat sympathetic.

best ensemble

Finally, I have to say that this is the best group play, because every character is full, exciting, and indispensable. The story is linked to each other, and there is cause and effect. In that era, what they did had nothing to do with national beliefs or self-interest, why did Bill Haydn betray the country, why was he a "gopher", and what was the purpose of Smiley to investigate at risk? In the end, Smiley's return, sitting alone in the position of "manager", how to explain these, we have no way of knowing.

Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy quotes

  • [Alleline's telex arrives from London]

    Ricki Tarr: Read it aloud.

Ben: "Personal for Tarr from Alleline: require clarification before meeting your request. Quote, 'information vital to safeguarding of the Circus', unquote, does not qualify, send further information."

Ricki Tarr: [laughing maniacally] That's the way, Percy boy! You keep stalling. I warn you, Ben, we've got some really lousy people in this outfit, I wouldn't trust a fucking one of them!

  • Percy Alleline: The Minister agrees with me that too many secrets are blowin' around here. Too much failure, too many scandals, too little solid intelligence.

Roy Bland: Percy does have a point, Control. We should be fighting communism, not each other.

Percy Alleline: Well, we're losing our reputation. Our partners.

    Control: [scoffs] Your bloody Yanks!

Percy Alleline: And we've had enough! There's going to be changes.

Easterhase: We need to decide if we want to be part of the past or part of the future.

Control: I should have left you where I found you.

    Easterhase: Look!

    Roy Bland: Control-...

    Control: Out! All of you!
