Hateful people must be pitiful, Esther is perverted and cruel, perhaps what she pursues is an authentic love like other girls, but her congenital defects hinder her. Leena in the adult world is an anomaly, and Esther in the child world is a weirdo, so where can she not be discriminated against?
Isabelle Fuhrman is absolutely breathtaking, and she's made the character, made the play, and implanted her 12-year-old girl flawlessly with the cunningness of a mature woman and the horror of a psychopath!
Amused by this passage, serious vs. disapproval, situational irony:
Kate Coleman: Esther? We have to talk about last night.
Esther: Do we?
Kate Coleman: Yes, we do... See, there are certain things that grownups do that children aren't supposed to see, and, uh... that was one of 'em.
[a pause; Esther keeps painting]
Kate Coleman: Esther, listen to me.
[Esther turns to Kate]
Kate Coleman: When grownups love each other very, very much... they want to show each other that love; they want to express it...
Esther: I know. They fuck.
