Detachment

If you are or feel screwed and fucked up on a daily basis.

If you are suicidal, or you were at some point of your life.

If you are fascinated with the everlasting melancholic touch on Adrian Brody's sculptured face.

If you read Edgar Allan Poe and love it.

If you listen to Bob Dylan and have a non-mainstream strong favor towards his My Back Pages.

If you once loved someone but pushed him/her away because you did not love yourself enough.

If you can feel the gravity dragging and crushing you, and yet you grow well-trained to ignore that, or not.

If you have an unknown traumatic childhood and hidden darkness within the corner of your youth.

If you find life and love confusingly intricate and wonder how everyone else manages to live so peacefully without discussing it.

THEN, this movie is going to hit you really hard.

People drift apart from each other and fall apart within.
Occasionally they complained about the "institution" but end up infusing into the setting, making the distortion more oppressive and firm. Everyone has mastered Anna Karenina's opening line and chooses to practice the ending sentence of fairy tales.
At the end of the day, maybe you are the paranoid crazy one and they are normal. You feel the urge to fit in and that's when you become gregarious again. The price you paid is the chronic pain of DETACHMENT.

Fortunately, or unfortunately, no one will see your struggle.

Detachment quotes

  • Henry Barthes: How are you to imagine anything if the images are always provided for you?

Henry Barthes: Doublethink. To deliberately believe in lies, while knowing they're false.

Henry Barthes: Examples of this in everyday life: "Oh, I need to be pretty to be happy. I need surgery to be pretty. I need to be thin, famous, fashionable." Our young men today are being told that women are whores, bitches, things to be screwed, beaten, shit on, and shamed. This is a marketing holocaust. Twenty-four hours a day for the rest of our lives, the powers that be are hard at work dumbing us to death.

Henry Barthes: So to defend ourselves, and fight against assimilating this dullness into our thought processes, we must learn to read. To stimulate our own imagination, to cultivate our own consciousness, our own belief systems. We all need skills to defend, to preserve our own minds.

  • Henry Barthes: [agitated at assisted living nurse] Let me be very clear here, you stop neglecting his needs, or I will start fucking with yours! I will have you fired! Then it's going to be your family! Your children are gonna be at risk! You got it?
