Coraline

Henry Selick's typical black punk work, this movie was the most exciting to watch at 12 midnight, and it gave me nightmares all night. The film's gloomy, depressing, and eerie style makes people shudder. This is an excellent adult fairy tale. Coraline's real home is dull and lifeless; the magic-forged home is colorful and full of life. What kind of home can truly contain the hearts of children who are hurt and long for love? The bizarre style of the film is exactly the same as that of Tim Burton. Although it only adheres to the dark tones of the original book, the charm of stop-motion animation shines brightly and I can't put it down.

Coraline quotes

  • Other Father: [robotic] All will be swell, soon as Mother's refreshed. Her strength is our strength...

[one of the robotic hands closes his mouth forcefully]

Other Father: Mustn't... talk when Mother's not here.

Coraline Jones: If you won't even talk to me, I'm gonna find the other Wybie. He'll help me.

    Other Father: No point.

    [face distorts]

Other Father: He pulled a loooong face... and Mother didn't like it.

  • Coraline Jones: [on the "Other" Mother] Why does she want me?

Cat: She wants something to love, I think. Something that isn't her. Or, maybe she'd just love something to eat.

Coraline Jones: Eat? That's ridiculous, mothers don't eat... daughters.

Cat: I don't know. How do you taste?

    [chuckles]
