I have been looking forward to this film. As a new animated film from Focus Features this year, it is also another masterpiece by Henry Selick. It is indeed very attractive. Being able to leave a margin between the Pixar and DreamWorks rivalry has been fresh to me. Coraline also continued the feeling of "The Nightmare Before Christmas", and as an admirer of stop-motion animation, it really made us nostalgic again. The film also continues the dark gothic style and respects the original from the critics. It's just a pity that I didn't watch it in 3D. But that's fine, it made me fall in love with the director, so I still felt the charm of the film.
I haven't read the original, although it's really very famous. But if it weren't for this movie, I, who shy away from horror stories and tragedies, might not have the guts to pick up this story and read it. So I didn't know the story before opening the movie. And this kind of stop-motion shooting of models and puppets actually made me completely immersed in this film. In today's rapid development of computer stunts, this method is used as an auxiliary technology (after all, it is not a zombie bride, and it is not one by one). It surprised me more than the huge investment gimmick - after all, I was still frightened. Hehe~ So it's a little hard for me to imagine what effect it would have on a child watching such a film.
Coraline is dissatisfied with the life in front of her. Be curious about the unknown and have the courage to explore the future. She wanders between her own dreams and reality, which makes it easy for me to imagine another great fairy tale, Alice in Wonderland. But this story is the opposite of it. What Coraline sees in her dreams is all good things, in stark contrast to the dullness of reality. But all these gorgeous appearances hide lies and dangers. It's like what the poster says, Be careful what you wish for. This allegorical story can educate children powerfully. Desire sometimes makes you brave, and sometimes it brings you trouble. Delicious food, magical gardens, and eye-catching performances are like the Internet, games, and material things that are placed in front of children today. If they cannot learn to overcome desire, they will lose their real self and real world. And when you face what you desire, you find that it is a completely unfamiliar face. Perhaps the boring life in the past makes us feel warmer.
I remember reading a report before that the real fairy tale is not what we heard. The prince, the frog and the princess hate each other at the end of the story, and Sleeping Beauty cannot live a happy life because of a century-old generation gap with the prince. In fact, life is real, and using fairy tales to coax children can only be a way to blindfold her. In life there are joys and sorrows. If you deceive life, life will deceive you. So Coraline's story is more like a real fairy tale, a horror version of Alice in Wonderland. Grey substance beneath a splendid exterior.
Another point, the film's OST is very good. You can save it.
