Hate and Love: Atonement

2019.9.28 15 years old watching "Romeo and Juliet" for the third time

When I was 12 years old and 13 years old, I watched this movie and recognized it as a "love classic". From the perspective of love, I don't think it's a tragedy.

Watching the film again today, I found that its core idea is not love. It is "the sin, punishment, atonement, and forgiveness of hatred."

The two families have accumulated grievances for generations, so that when the family members meet, conflicts and fights occur, disrupting the order and destroying the peace. The characters in the play are often impulsive, extreme and narrow-minded, and they often commit crimes because of trivial matters. Romeo and Juliet, the sons and daughters of enemies, fell in love. When they asked the priest to witness their marriage, the priest thought that maybe the combination of their love could resolve the grievances between the two families. This is what I saw in the whole film. The theme of "Resolve Hate with Love".

In the end, the death of Romeo and Juliet did resolve the sins caused by hatred, allowing family members to recognize and reflect on their own faults. The final narration says "Some shall be pardoned, and some punished." I think with the exception of Romeo and Juliet who didn't take part in the family fight, who gave death as a pardon, the rest of the people who were left need to be punished, and their atonement has just begun.

Once a copy of Leo Tolstoy's "Resurrection" made me understand what resurrection is. And it also helped me understand the religious meaning of Romeo and Juliet, about the "redemption" that all teachings refer to. "Resurrection" is the atonement of the master and one person, and "Romeo and Juliet" is the common atonement of the two families.

Re-watching this film after two years, I have gained a lot of deeper understanding, but I think these are just very superficial cognitions about this film. If I have the opportunity, I hope to go to the theater to see "Romeo and Juliet" once, and analyze Sarah well. Ong's work. At 12 I didn't think it was a tragedy, and now I still think it had a happy ending. The real tragedy of this work should be the people who hate each other, narrow-minded, and full of ill-will.
