Mad Men has been watched no less than three times so far, and there will be a fourth, a fifth, etc. From a male perspective, there are many reasons for liking this show. Let me list a few first:

1. Let’s start with the most simple, character modeling, costumes, props, scenes, and even lighting, all of which truly reproduce the American society of the 1960s. The whole play does not talk about the plot and the acting skills of the actors, but it is also pleasing to the eye and immersive.

2. The cast selection is impeccable. The image of each character is completely consistent with the character to be created by the script, and there is no sense of drama.

3. The plot covers a wide range. These include family, relationships, Vietnam War, homosexuality, feminism, race, alcohol, tobacco, drugs. Most of the above are hot topics from the 60s (and even now).

4. From a male perspective, the male protagonist Don Draper as Alpha Male is the goal of almost every man. As a man, no matter whether he can reach that height, he always needs to satisfy his little desires from movies and TV dramas.

Now let's get to the point. The whole play is not so much a description of Don Draper as an advertising man, but rather a description of Peggy's transformation from a rookie in the workplace to a mature and capable professional woman. From the very beginning, he entered the company as Don's secretary, and was BS-ed by his colleagues around him. Later, he was favored by Don through the Lipstick case, and was promoted to copywriter until he became cheif. The audience can clearly see her growth process.

1. Dont dress like little girl. This is Joan's first formal advice to Peggy. Dressing is undoubtedly the first impression a person makes on others. Especially on the Manhattan peninsula, others are enough to locate your identity through your clothes, restaurants and hotels you go in and out. Peggy was still very obedient, and the next day, she changed out of the slightly loose clothes that were the same as her figure at the time, and put on a professional dress.

2. If you want to be like him, you need to treat him equally. This is Bobbie's advice to Peggy. In Bobbie's eyes, she certainly knows how to control a man, and here, she told Peggy the best one. Because of the background of the times, it is difficult to achieve this in itself, but as a woman in the new era, she must try her best to fight for her rights and equality. It turned out that Peggy called Don the next day instead of Mr. Draper.

3. A girl went to Gentlemen's Club. It was a celebration party. Peggy felt that she should be the same as other male colleagues. The entertainment they deserve belongs to the scope of work, and she should also participate. So, she dressed herself dazzlingly and walked into the club with confidence and a little timidity.

Mad Men quotes

  • Pete Campbell: A thing like that!

  • Don Draper: Advertising is based on one thing: happiness. You know what happiness is? Happiness is smell of a new car. It's freedom from fear. It's a billboard on the side of the road that screams with reassurance that whatever you're doing, its okay. You are okay.
