the specter of capitalism

The secret room setting of "Cube" has subverted the conventional mode of hardship drama. There is no shady screen behind the secret room, no meaning, and there may not even be viewers. The reason why people are thrown in is just that the machine is finished and needs to be used. The authority that builds the secret room is just an empty symbol, on the one hand it is the projection of people's fantasy (which is explained by other general works), and on the other hand, it is filled with its essence by people's actions. This is also a more postmodern interpretation of Kafka's behemoth of power, which not only points out the predicament in which man is oppressed by the absurd and has nowhere to go, but it is each man himself that causes this predicament. The cube is a specter of capitalism, created by chance by the hands of the market (everyone does their job just for profit), and the maker is drawn into the cycle of consumption. During this process, the will is not present, and the main body of power is floating in the air.

Cube quotes

  • Leaven: [to Worth and Holloway] Well... Duh! Have you been on glue all your lives? I felt guilty for ruining the world since I was like seven! God, if you need someone to blame throw a rock!

  • Quentin: Why don't you tell us what your purpose is, Worth?

Worth: Often wondered that myself. I'm just a guy, I work in an office building doing office building stuff. I wasn't exactly bursting with joie de vivre before I got here, life just sucks in general.

Holloway: Oh I can't stand that attitude.

    Leaven: 'Cos he's right.
