"Gandhi" at the 55th Academy Awards for Best Picture. Produced by Columbia in 1982. The film is 191 minutes long.
As the name suggests, this is a biographical film about the Indian legend "Mahatma Gandhi". The film captures several representative clips, recounting several experiences of Gandhi leading nonviolent non-resistance movements in South Africa and India. Gandhi has a bit of "divine" in him. His passive non-resistance is simply incredible. Flesh to the flesh, to violence and racism and colonialism with the attitude of "I don't go to hell, whoever goes to hell". His face was haggard and his body was thin, giving him the image of an ascetic. His moral cultivation and self-discipline are perhaps unmatched by few in recent history. He practiced non-violence throughout his life, and went on hunger strikes several times for Indian independence. However, in the end he died at the gunpoint of Indian extremists. Suffering in the form of masochism to oppose domination is also oppressive, and may be useful in certain scenarios. But the world order, at least for the next 50 years, will still be maintained by strength. When confronted with an adversary like the British colonists, perhaps because of Gandhi's self-sacrificing spirit, he backed down, perhaps because he was still relying on laws and rules to act. Then once you encounter an unreasonable and unreasonable opponent, when you push it to nowhere to retreat, you still have to strike to protect your rights. When Gandhi looked at the bottom of India with sympathy, he may not have imagined that India and Pakistan will continue to be divided, and there will be bloodshed and war, as well as division and terrorism.
Ben Kingsley's greatest achievement in life was to play this little old Indian. Decades of change from young to old. He is almost a copy of Gandhi. It is said that he was also born in Gandhi's hometown, and the actor's appearance itself is very similar to Gandhi. He deliberately learned Gandhi's English pronunciation and weaving. He played Gandhi not only as a divinity, but also as a human being. He also sings and jokes. In this film, Ben Kingsley and Gandhi become one.
As a biopic it's fantastic. The narrative is simple and unpretentious, and it can be seen that the director deliberately restores the original appearance of the great man. Follow Gandhi's footsteps from South Africa back to India. The vast Africa, the mysterious Indian scenery is very magnificent. In the shooting of the scenery, this film is comparable to the beautiful Arabian Peninsula in "Lawrence of Arabia".
Excerpts from the wonderful lines:
There have been tyrants and murderers and for a time, they can seem invincible but in the end they always fall Think of it, always.
The weak can never forgive, Forgiveness is the attribute of the strong.
A man is but the product of his thoughts, what he thinks, he becomes.

Gandhi quotes

  • Lord Irwin, Viceroy: Mr. Gandhi will find that it takes a great deal more than a pinch of salt to bring down the British Empire.

  • Edward R. Murrow: [at Gandhi's funeral] The object of this massive tribute died as he had always lived - a private man without wealth, without property, without official title or office. Mahatma Gandhi was not a commander of great armies nor ruler of vast lands. He could boast no scientific achievements or artistic gift. Yet men, governments and dignitaries from all over the world have joined hands today to pay homage to this little brown man in the loincloth who led his country to freedom. Pope Pius, the Archbishop of Canterbury, President Truman, Chiang Kai-shek, The Foreign Minister of Russia, the President of France... are among the millions here and abroad who have lamented his passing. In the words of General George C. Marshall, the American Secretary of State, "Mahatma Gandhi had become the spokesman for the conscience of mankind, a man who made humility and simple truth more powerful than empires." And Albert Einstein added, "Generations to come will scarce believe that such a one as this ever in flesh and blood walked upon this earth."
