end of the road

I watched this movie when I was exercising. Staring at the fitness data and moving my limbs is a very dull thing. The movie is called "The Lion". It sounds very decent, like a hero movie. In the cover poster of iQIYI, the protagonist has a colorful halo on his face, giving people a hopeful look. HAPPY ENDING. The atmosphere of the film with positive energy and a happy ending fits my fitness mood, so I clicked it and watched it. After all, it is not appropriate to think about ghosts, technology, violence, unsolved cases, etc. when exercising, and it is not advisable to be sensational.

Facts have proved that this seemingly random movie is in line with my expectations. Not only the film has few words, but the narrative is also slow and eloquent. Similarly, the story is about a child. Whenever a child appears in the film, I know that this is a child with a bumpy fate. Whenever something comes out of the child's mouth, what kind of promise does someone close to him make? Will be disappointed in the end. This kind of pre-judgment cannot be said to be the sixth sense. It should be said that stories are told in this way. On the road of slow growth, it has been internalized into an intuition and formed a fixed mindset.

The first scene of the film is a barren hillside, the little protagonist plays with butterflies in the twilight backlight, and then his brother and a long coal railway appear, and the railway has been the focus of the film since then. The road is a rich intention, whether in the city or in the countryside, there is a road, it can connect you and me, convey warmth, and make each other close. The road also represents fear. There are more and more roads, woven into a net, and it becomes endless. No family is willing to let their young children go out alone, even in the corridors of the building alone is unbearable. Some people lament that the once rich and diverse lively children, like the folk attractions in China, are becoming the same. Children, railroads, and homes are the cornerstones of this film, and they also feel incredibly real to me.

The film deliberately portrays the little protagonist as witty and clever, and I was slow to react in the middle of the film. This child found himself on a moving train, on a crowded terrace, and did not cry. He was so calm that people watched bitterly. . His precocious puberty led to his loss, and it also allowed him to escape the clutches of the bad guys and go to his adoptive parents. He never said much, but his eyes were smart, and he was observing and thinking all the time. Looking at such a child made people feel relieved and hopeful, and he was indeed an ideal child. This impression makes me look forward to the second half of the film he can become a pivotal big man. But no, he studied hotel management and became a highly educated person. Then, suddenly one day he became resistant to his existing rich and enjoyable life and wanted to find his relatives. This turning point makes me a little doubtful. His memory is so clear, why did he generate bodhicitta so late?

Finally, through a careful search on Google Maps, I found my original home with ease, fulfilled my wish to go home, and found my relatives. When my relatives met, I also burst into tears. But I always feel unfinished, as if I was expecting to see a group at first, but only saw a lonely mortal in the end. The film seems to lack some sublimation. The image of the lion is very good, but the final interpretation is too thin. Is the lion just the protagonist's own name?

Lion quotes

  • Saroo Brierley: Please, could you not do anything while I'm away to make mum more unhappy than you already do?

Mantosh Brierley: Mate, why do you think I stay away?

  • [last lines]

Saroo Brierley: [leaving phone message] Hi, mum. I know you will be sound asleep. I just want to say that I'm safe. Safe and all the questions have been answered. There are no more deadends. I found my mother, and... she thanks you both for raising me. She understands that you are my family. She's... happy, just knowing I'm alive. I found her, but that doesn't change who you are. I love you, mom... so much. And you, Dad. And Mantosh. Saroo.
