fictional people doing real things

After such a long time, I finally couldn't help writing a movie review again. I thought my movie review was naive and almost gave up. This is not a movie review, it's all about the experience of watching the movie, and it's very hypocritical. If you don't accept it, you don't have to argue. I know what you mean.

I was really looking forward to watching "Born to Kill", after all, Quentin's script, and Oliver was a director who was deeply influenced by the new wave, but after watching it, I have a lot to say about this script with too many things mixed up.

There are two inconsistencies:

First, Quentin and Oliver's script style is different.

Quentin's style is like chewing beef jerky. You can't be in a hurry or panic when you eat it. You just need to calm down and taste it slowly. There is depth, at least he wants to express something seriously, and he is good at mobilizing the audience's emotions into the environment he wants to create.

The important difference is that, taking "Born to Kill" as an example, Quentin definitely didn't want to express anything, especially any reality or social issue. He didn't want to pay attention and couldn't pay attention to it. The movie is full of a lot of violent and bloody scenes?", Quentin always answered impatiently "because ~ because ~ violence ~ force ~ very ~ interesting ~ thinking ~ ah". In my opinion, Quentin is the person who understands the aesthetics of violence best. He can express violence in a pure way. Moreover, he can always make the audience realize clearly that this is not reality, this is a movie, this is a It's a literary work that makes the audience realize that this is a movie world that is detached from reality, which is very critical, and it also proves why Quentin's films always allow people to enjoy violence without making people feel sick.

But Oliver is different. His scripts always reflect reality to a certain extent. At that time, after watching "Scarface", I was very shocked. One is that Papa's acting is too good, and it is also because Oliver has made a gangster like a gangster. The naked reality of the characters in a materialistic society is expressed very accurately.

In "Born to Kill", I could almost feel that the setting of the murderous and the framework of romantic love must be done by Quentin, with a romantic ruffian feeling out of reality, but very attractive; the final ending shoots to death Robert Downey Jr., I don't know whose decision this is, but the full sense of irony towards the media in the second half must be Oliver's thing. He wants to express something. I guess this is the filming of "Born to Kill". The finished product upset Quentin.

So the final product of the script gives me the feeling that because the second half of the script is close to reality, although the script has depth, the framework of Quentin's romantic and violent aesthetics has been destroyed. It can be said that the script has become thicker. But less romance.

Second, the incompatibility of New Wave style with violent aesthetics.

To be honest, after watching so much of Godard Truffaut, I really fell in love with the petty bourgeoisie of the New Wave. In my impression, the New Wave should be beautiful and artistic. There are crazy violence like "Weekend" to criticize capitalist society, but this is a thousand miles away from Quentin's violent aesthetics, and this wave style is still suitable for describing some smaller-scale things after all. Godard's most successful works are also the first few. So, to say a somewhat biased personal opinion: To some extent, the new wave style does not match the violent aesthetics.

What's more, in the second half of "Born to Kill", Oliver used a lot of hand-held lenses to shoot, giving people a feeling of a documentary, which greatly increased the authenticity. , the filming seems to be realistic, the important thing is that the romance is gone, so many viewers will not buy it, because this expression is like a cult, especially when setting up the interview, the murderer is talking to the camera, as if to beautify his behavior, at least It is impossible for Quentin to do this. This is not just describing violence like Quentin, but it is easier to give people the illusion that he is promoting violence. Regarding this issue, I agree with a short comment: "For people who are not in rebellion, For adolescents, it will inevitably be uncomfortable." It doesn't mean that violence can't be filmed in this way, but that since it is connected to reality, it is necessary to bring some criticism of violence, or to show violence completely out of reality to make the audience aware of it. So, this is just describing the violence itself, even if there is no criticism, it must not be promoted.

This article mainly expresses my personal views on the reasons why the film's realistic meaning has increased, the Quinn-style style has faded, and it is easy to give the impression of distortion of values after Oliver changed Quentin's script. Of course, I just want to express these. Personally, I still like this movie very much, after all, it gave me an unusual viewing experience.

I'm sorry, but I really can't understand people who think with adrenaline. I still often want to kill people. If I don’t kill them, I’m not pure, but if I kill them, they’re pure? Give this film a high score, it seems that there are a lot of people who live in grief~

  • Dwight McClusky: How's a fella like you get to be involved with psychos, anyways?

Jack Scagnetti: Actually Dwight, I'd recommend having your mother killed by one. After that happened I developed a rather keen interest in the subject.

Mickey: Looks like we got us a Mexican Standoff.

Jack Scagnetti: We've had this day from the beginning, huh, Mickey? Now slide that shotgun over here. Put your hands on your head and your head against the floor!

Mickey: Or what, you'll wound me? I could blow you in half and you know it.

Jack Scagnetti: I never wounded anything in my life. I got you locked right between the eyes, Mickey. I've had you locked from the jump, you phony!
