As the earliest Hollywood cartoon introduced that year, as the first Hollywood blockbuster I watched in the cinema in my impression, The Lion King has a very high status in my heart. It would not be an exaggeration to say that it is the best animated film in my opinion. So when I first learned about CG for this 2D animation, I was very happy. In fact, I also know that 3D 2D animation is often difficult to succeed. And with Disney's urgency in the past few years, I don't expect Disney to spend much effort on the road from 2D to 3D. So when I was sitting in the cinema watching this movie, I didn't really look forward to it. It was just like that. I'll watch it as you do. I'm very happy that there will be a 3D Lion King, but I'm not really looking forward to it. Facts have proved that indeed this film should not have too high expectations, it is just a 6-point propositional composition.
Let’s talk about the most important CG techniques first. Personally, I feel that the Planet of the Apes is in front, and the production of animal expressions should not be too difficult. But one of the biggest problems with this one, one that anyone can see, is that the animals have little to no expression. Especially those who have seen the original version will have a deep understanding. Personally, I think this problem is not a technical problem, but the director's idea. I'm sure Brother Happy chose the former when considering whether to make an animal world or a Toy Story. Therefore, almost all the animals in the film deliberately retain the appearance of the animals themselves. But the problem is that San Wu Ling Bo Li's expression is accompanied by a very vivid dubbing, and this difference makes me feel very playful. Another problem I think is that the spectacular scenery in the original version almost shrunk here. For example, in the scene of the galloping ox, the Grand Canyon in the original film feels like a huge scene like the American Grand Canyon. When I got here, I suddenly shrunk a lot, making the original sense of grandeur and oppression almost gone. For example, the scenes depicting the African savannah at the beginning have become very ordinary and boring scenes in the CG version. I thought that there may be such a problem after the 2D screen is turned into 3D, but if you look at various online celebrity check-in tourist attractions, you can also make a blockbuster look, then the problem of this film can only be understood as the director. I didn't even want to use the lens and other methods to create a sense of blockbuster.
The second problem is the change of the plot. My first impression after watching the film is that the film is fast, and many classic scenes are almost passed in seconds. After I came back and read the introduction, I was surprised to find that the 3D version actually had more than 40 minutes of content than the 2D version. This fact is the opposite of my experience. So after thinking about it, the biggest problem should be the plot, especially the plot of several key points. For example, the part where the old mandrill found out that Simba was still alive. The original plot was that the mandrill found a mass in the air, grabbed a handful and put it in a scoop. After dangling around, I had to break open a fruit, eat it while akimbo, and then looked at it for a few seconds before I was surprised to find that it was Simba's hair. In the new version, Mandrill found Mao, and grasped it to see that it was Simba. You see, it's too fast and unnatural. The same example is the reunion of Nana and Simba. Personally, I feel that it is these fast-forwards at key points that cause the plot part of the film to always advance very quickly. And a lot of time is spent on some wasted scenes showing the technology. For example, the mouse that was caught by the scar at the beginning, for a full minute, we watched it run around. Such a waste lens makes people think that they are watching the animal world. And the loss of this sense of rhythm makes people feel that after watching it, in retrospect, it seems that nothing happened, and then it feels that the film is very short and not long.
Another problem that is not a big problem is the restoration of the singing and dancing parts of the original dream scenes. In fact, I really want to see how the director will act. It turned out that the director basically had no brains, very normal and very boring.
In general, the most intuitive feeling I got after watching this film is that the director's level is very general, and the control of the plot is not good enough. The most important thing is that there is not enough research on the transformation of 2D animation to 3DCG pictures, especially how to retain the original 2D art after the transformation. To be honest, it's a little disappointing that such an important IP Disney would deal with such a thing. After all, what we do here is not a comic but a movie, and it can't be restarted if it can't be broken like a comic.
