In the Heat of the Night

Not nervous, not exciting, but very calm and very angry, every detail and every scene is full of dramatic tension, which attracts you to watch, and what attracts you to watch is the most basic of the movie: plot and acting. No need for exaggerated commercial elements, just give me conflicts and superb acting skills to make a good film. It is not as meticulous as the current suspense film, just like a documentary, it slowly shows us the process of solving the case, real and not exaggerated. But the only thing that puzzles me is how the detective connects the person who has affair with the girl and the murderer.

Re-watching an uncomplicated case reflects the fact that the deep-rooted racial discrimination investigation process is not exciting, but this kind of slowness and well-dressed black and the heat of the southern town complement each other. The subtitles of the Hong Kong version are still a bit unacceptable.

The sheriff's acting is ahead of its time. The case is not very complicated, but there is a lot of foreplay, which makes you real and fake, a bit like a Hitchcock movie. In addition to this, there seems to be thinking about black people, which is very in line with the characteristics of that era.

In the Heat of the Night quotes

  • [after Chief Gillespie convinced Virgil Tibbs to stay in town and finish the investigation, they both go to a mechanic's place to get Tibbs a car]

    Chief Gillespie: Jess.

[Jess, a black mechanic, appears from under the car he is working on]

Chief Gillespie: Jess, this is, uh... This is Virgil. He's working for me. Give him something that runs. You fix him up, you hear.

Jess: What I fix runs. Who pays.

    Chief Gillespie: Police.

    [to Tibbs:]

Chief Gillespie: Well, you know where to find me.

[after Gillespie has left, Jess looks Virgil and his suit up and down]

Jess: What you doin' here, man.

    Virgil Tibbs: Policeman.

Jess: You're a policeman here in Sparta.

Virgil Tibbs: They've got a murder they don't know what to do with. They need a whipping boy.

    Jess: You got a roof.

Virgil Tibbs: No. I'll find a Motel.

[Jess chuckles and picks up Virgil's suitcase]

    Jess: Viola... We got company.

  • Gillespie: You look at bodies all the time in Philadelphia. Why can't you look at this one?

Tibbs: Why can't you look at it for yourself?

Gillespie: Because I'm not an expert. OFFICER!
