Reason is no match for emotion

The film persuaded me emotionally, but not logically. The trial is still entangled in whether Judy Garland is cheating and whether Montgomery Cliff is mentally retarded. In fact, it defaulted to the legitimacy of the Nazi law and avoided the question of whether it is guilty to comply with the draconian law. In the end, Lancaster's confession became a turning point in the film. It is not so much that Spencer Cusser tried Lancaster, but Lancaster tried himself. This is a moral trial, and it is illegal.

  • Mrs. Bertholt: When I was a child, we used to go for long rides into the country in summertime. But I was never allowed to run to the lemonade stand with the others. I was told, "Control your thirst. Control hunger. Control emotion." It has served me well.

  • Judge Dan Haywood: Things haven't been very easy for you, have they?

Mrs. Bertholt: I'm not used to them being easy. I'm not fragile, Judge Haywood.
