Carlos Gallardo, who played the unlucky guitarist, is an old friend of RR. Out of loyalty, this guy also sold part of his family's land as a production fund. Two guitar cases, one for the piano and the other for the gun, the guitarist is treated as a killer, chased madly, flees quickly, has no time to justify, no dialogue-the plot is so wonderful that it saves a lot of budget. In the process of creating the script, RR deliberately avoided dialogues, thus eliminating the need for recording. When filming, the noise from the roadside is like a time bomb, which is hard to predict. Once it is recorded, it will be retaken. Eliminating the sound can be a lot of peace of mind. RR also saves film as much as possible, because I am afraid that the borrowed 16S camera is too old and I don't know when it will crash. As for the crew's diet, the team often went to starring Gallardo's house for dinner. Sometimes RR even ended work deliberately before lunch.
The high efficiency forced by the shortage of funds runs through the entire shooting process. The lens generally passes in one pass. At first, RR planned to shoot a total of three to four weeks. Ten days after shooting started, he was told that the camera had been sold and he had to return it as soon as possible. So the rest was compressed by him and filmed in four days. The editing took only two and a half weeks. From start to finish, RR has done the screenwriting, director, editing, sound effects, soundtrack, photography, video and special effects.
After winning the award, Columbia Pictures invested another million to perfect it, including zooming in to 35mm film and adding a new audio track. El Mariachi later won two million at the box office. Colombia was so happy to spend another seven million to shoot the sequel Desperado for RR, this time with Banderas as the lead. RR still takes care of the work of writing, directing, editing and stabilizing the camera alone. This sequel later won the Cannes Palme d'Or, with a box office of 50 million.
