An all-female film

I don't know how it feels to watch this film from a male perspective, but I think if it is a purely female film, no one will refute it. After all, this special and delicate emotion is not understood by everyone, so I was able to resonate with this movie, even I myself was somewhat unexpected.

How rich and poor is the heroine's spiritual world, her soul is tied to the piano, which is a naive but passionate feeling. Mostly because of the simplicity of life, the piano and her depend on each other for life, which makes her proud. All she needs at this time is a listener, which is why her husband was defeated when he didn't want to move the piano. In many cases, the respect lost to men is never recovered. So no matter how good her husband treats her, her heart can no longer be taken back.

When did the love for the neighbor’s man begin to spread and grow? This is a difficult line to draw. It would be unfair to say that its beginnings were platonic like all good ideals wishfully. This love is inseparable from lust. Love is inherently closely related to hormones, and this lust is too moving.

Why is this a movie made for women? One of the reasons is that men and women have different sexual pursuits, that is, women like long foreplay. The director gave us plenty of time. During the foreplay of the three piano lessons, the man kept a proper distance, wandering in a place that could not be seen but felt behind the woman, as if playing some kind of game. There is only a little skin contact, which continuously pushes this erotic drama to a climax. Later, the woman practiced the piano in her own home, as if she could still feel the ghost behind her, turning her head back and forth. At this time, she knew that the game had become addictive.

Most of the extramarital affairs do not end well. Cruelly speaking, this finger should probably be broken. The society of this age still has heavy moral and religious constraints. The cross hanging in a woman's house can tell what kind of person it is. After breaking her finger, she stumbled dumbly in the woods. She did not show anger or sadness. She was probably numbed by despair, and it was probably her punishment from a moral point of view. She had no reason to feel What about anger? At this time, she had no choice but to accept it. One thing that is admirable for women is that her tenderness can be transformed into toughness, but she is more silent at extreme moments. This contradiction made her husband incomprehensible and made people crazy.

The biggest reason that makes this heroine so real is her uncertainty. Like any real person, her actions are random and unpredictable. She asked to leave the piano. She tentatively put her feet into the ropes that pulled off the boat. She sank with the piano for a while, and then decided to break free from the ropes and get back to life. No one can tell exactly how her head works, and the mechanism that determines the next step, but when the burden of trying to theory is thrown away, all these motives become excusable. She never knew what she wanted. From the moment of divorced extramarital affair to the moment when she decided to end her life, she didn't make a choice until the end. And her final choice is to respect instinct, as she has always done.

Piano is the theme throughout the film, but it is not the focus of the film. In the end, a woman can only serve one master, because her heart is always single-minded, and her piano and love probably never have it at the same time. Choosing one of them will definitely neglect the other. In the end, she was still able to play the piano, but she was not obsessed with her first sickness. She can finally let it go, because she already has love. She finally laughed while kissing her lover, because she could finally enjoy this love without the shackles of the betrayer, to her ex-husband or to her piano.

The Piano quotes

  • Ada: I have told you the story of your father many many times.

Flora: Oh, tell me again! Was he a teacher?

    Ada: Yes.

Flora: How did you speak to him?

Ada: I didn't need to speak. I could lay thoughts out in his mind like they were a sheet.

Flora: Why didn't you get married?

Ada: He became frightened and stopped listening.

  • [first lines]

Ada: The voice you hear is not my speaking voice - -but my mind's voice. I have not spoken since I was six years old. No one knows why - -not even me. My father says it is a dark talent, and the day I take it into my head to stop breathing will be my last. Today he married me to a man I have not yet met. Soon my daughter and I shall join him in his own country. My husband writes that my muteness does not bother him - and hark this! He says, "God loves dumb creatures, so why not I?" 'Twere good he had God's patience, for silence affects everyone in the end. The strange thing is, I don't think myself silent. That is because of my piano. I shall miss it on the journey.
