Look Away Quotes

  • Dan: [holds up mirror] What do you see, hm? You see a sophisticated young woman, do you? A fiery, independent spirit? An adult? Is that what you see? 'Cause I'll tell you what I see. I see a little girl trying way too hard and looking pathetic. Now sit in your goddamn chair.

  • Dan: You look terrible. Are you sure you wanna go to school looking like that?

  • Dan: I'm your dad. You think I don't know why you don't wear your hair back in a ponytail?

  • Maria: What do you know, anyway?

Airam: Nothing that you don't already.

  • Airam: [through her sobs] You're not real. I'm imagining you. Why am I seeing you?

    Airam: Because I'm here.

    Maria: Who... who are you?

    Airam: You don't remember me?

    Maria: I don't know you.

Airam: I've always been here. Look in the window. I'm everywhere you are. Whenever you see yourself, what you really see is me.

    Maria: What do you want?

    Airam: What do *you* want?

Maria: What do you want from me?

Airam: I can take your sadness away. Listen, I'm here for you... I know you. I know your secret desires, your fears... who you love... who you hate.

    [leans forward]

    Airam: I understand you completely.

    Maria: But you aren't me?

    Airam: [chuckles] No.

    [shakes her head]

    Maria: Who are you then?

    Airam: Look at me.

    Maria: What?

Airam: Look at me. What do you see?

    Maria: I s- I see what I look like.

Airam: What do you look like?

    Maria: I...

    [wavers]

    Maria: you're beautiful.

Airam: [shakes her head] We are beautiful.

Maria: [smiles happily] Do you have a name?

    Airam: Airam.

    Maria: [repeats softly] Airam.

    [smiles]

  • Airam: Can you look at me and sincerely say you want her back in your life? Good. There are no lies between us. Remember, I'm doing all of this for you. For us.

  • Airam: Am I not doing what you've always wanted to do? Saying what you've always wanted to say? Everything you didn't dare?

    Maria: Maybe.

Airam: It's about time for the truth to surface, don't you think?

    Maria: I guess.

  • Airam: I remember all of those things. All of those things that you choose to forget...

    Maria: No, no...

Airam: But I won't let you forget, Maria, because that's what real friends do. They share their pain. And you have so much inside of you.

  • Lily: Good morning.

    Maria: Fuck you.

    [smirks]

  • Amy: [at dinner table] So, honey, um, guess who I ran into today... Sue, George's mother... do you remember George? You went to science camp with him. He was a smart kid.

    Maria: I don't remember.

    [just toying with her food]

Amy: Curious George, that's what you called him. Anyway, he remembers you very fondly from science camp. So, I was thinking that maybe...

    Maria: No.

Amy: Um, Maria, you don't even know what I was gonna say next.

    Maria: Just... don't.

Amy: Fine. If you don't wanna hear the rest of what I was gonna say...

Dan: No, she does. You know your mother's trying to be helpful, right? Right?

    Maria: Right.

Amy: Here is my idea. Just that... You're here and George is here, and you both like each other, so... if Winter Prom is coming up, you could both go together.

Maria: Mom, I'm not going to the prom.

    Amy: Why not?

Maria: Because it's stupid and I don't want any part of it.

Amy: But it's such a beautiful tradition. You're really gonna be missing out. It's your senior year.

Maria: [yells out] Missing out on what?

[utensils clatter into plate as she rises and storms out]

    Dan: That went well.

Amy: [sighs] I guess she just needs time to come out of her shell.

Dan: Christ, Amy, she's nearly eighteen.

Amy: Well, she's a late bloomer.

    Dan: She has no friends.

    Amy: She's friends with Lily.

Dan: Lily's a habit, not a friend. She has no social life. She has no confidence. As far as I'm aware, she's never even had a conversation with a boy. She doesn't...

    [gestures at plate]

Dan: touch her food. She weighs less than she did two years ago. Wake up, Amy! Just look at her! Look at her!

[Maria is sitting at the top of the stairs, very upset overhearing all of this]

Dan: We have a screwed-up daughter!

Amy: You're being too hard on her. We just need to give her time to blossom.

    Dan: Blossom into what?

  • Lily: [picking up her friend in flashy new Porsche] Good morning.

    Maria: Hey.

Lily: So, what do you think?

    Maria: It's nice.

    Lily: 'Nice'?

Maria: Okay, it's... it's really nice.

Lily: 'Nice' is a boy you don't wanna go out with. This...

    [lets the top down]

    Lily: is an acid-green turbo-charged 911.

    [with big grin:]

Lily: This is definitely not nice!

  • Maria: You were right.

Airam: You have no one taking care of you out there.

    Maria: [tearfully] Well, there's Mom.

Airam: She's weak. She'll do everything he tells her, and you know why.

Maria: Because she still thinks he gives a shit about her.

    Airam: That's right.

Maria: [shakes her head] God, they really are something, aren't they?

    Airam: Hmm.

Maria: I mean, he cannot give a fuck, and she...

    Airam: ...desperately needs one.

[Maria chuckles, and Airam joins in merriment, and they bond]

  • Lily: Um, are we gonna skate later?

Maria: Oh, shit, no, um... it's Thursday, I've got... a bonding date with my Dad.

Lily: You Brennans are so weird.

Maria: You don't know the half of it.

    Lily: Okay, well, tomorrow then?

  • Maria: [in school hallway, confronts heckler] You're not laughing.

    [closes in]

Maria: Why? Am I not funny anymore?

    [up close]

Maria: Or is that because you get a hard-on every time you see me?

  • Naomi: You're lucky to be in high school. I miss that time so much. No worries, all you care about are guys, right?
