Surprisingly good
I didn't hold high expectation for the film when I first watched the moive trailor couple of months ago. I thought it was, like most films, just a movie with stunning sceneries and twisted plots. But as it turns out, it's not the case.

The adaptation of the film polishes the main line of the story into a story of love and forgiveness, but what I understand Maugham is telling is the story of women's awakening; Water's pain and forbearance in the original book are moving and grief-stricken, and have never appeared since then. The warm part of the past is realized in the movie, which is both a comfort and a deficiency. PS: Norton is so charming.
