I quite like these kinds of films, where irresponsible mothers abandon their children to relatives, and dumb relatives bring up children. Following such a main line, the mother's unreliability is enriched and ridiculous, and the good relatives are more legendary and wonderful, and the story becomes richer. Very loving.

A clichéd fairy tale; but pretty well done, especially the "second-hand lion" metaphor - even old age doesn't deprive a lion of its dignity.
