      Women in Patriarchy and Religion

"Moon River" is one of the Indian trilogy by Indian director Dipa Mehta. The film boldly challenges local traditions and taboos, and explores the topics of gender, religion and democracy.

          Democracy and Women's Liberation
The film is set in a remote village in 1930s India that follows ancient traditions, and the idea of democracy has more or less infiltrated it. First of all, the children of the local nobles. They have received a new education and are exposed to advanced...

Gotta wake up at some point

In 2001 there were still 30 to 40 million women living that way. The director uses the camera lens to present such a real fact with almost no emotion. In India in the 1930s, the widow's commune was a bad custom at the time. It was believed that widows should belong to their deceased husbands and should not marry, and would be isolated in the widow's commune. They believed that widows were unclean and insulting to the gods. In the society of child marriage, women become widows, and it goes...

Reminds me of "The Woman in the Enclosure"

The film's narration is eloquent, and the graphics and music are just right. It reflects the tragic life of widows at that time. No future, no access. Love is only part of the story. The life of a little girl, the heroine who becomes a woman who has lost her footing, and the living conditions of several other widows. It makes me sad.
I am reminded of a domestic TV series I watched a long time ago. It was about the life of Chinese widows in the past. It was called "The Woman in the...

      living water, calamity

Why is the movie called "Water" (often translated as woe/moon river)? Is it raining because every beautiful love scene in the film? Or is it because of the origin of India and the river, the water has been entangled for several generations?
Water is always flowing, and water that is not flowing can cause many problems. Just like the stagnant water written by Mr. Wen Yiduo, "This is a ditch of desperate stagnant water, and the breeze can't make any ripples." In this film set in the late...

    Background creation

As a famous director in India, Deepa Mehta has a picture in his mind that has been kept in mind for 10 years. It was in the pilgrimage site of Varanasi. Mehta saw a widow shrinking into a shrimp shape, her body weathered by the years, her hair so short that it clinged to her scalp, she was running on all fours, frantically looking for someone who had fallen into the Ganges River. something. In the early morning pilgrims, her pain was...

    Evaluation action

This is an Indian/Canada movie full of revolutionary emotions. A river separates the two worlds of India, and on this side of the river, religious tradition confines widows in the closed world of monasteries. Religious traditions deprive them of the love of ordinary people, and they will spend the rest of their lives serving the gods. On the other side of the river, there are nobles and clergy who have high religious status but are not...
