The Phantom of Liberty is Luis Bunuel's penultimate film and the last of a trilogy of narrative experiments in his later years. "Fantôme" (fantôme) comes from the first sentence of the "Communist Manifesto", "a ghost, the ghost of communism, wandering in Europe", which is said to be a tribute to Marx.
