The City That Never Sleeps: The Real Microcosm of the Post-War Big Apple

The "Big Apple", which is often talked about in the mouth, is like a dream city with infinite possibilities in the eyes of many people. It contains unexpected and promising opportunities and hopes. In Somerset Maugham's writings, it is a place of intrigue and intrigue, full of vanity motives and flattery performances of chasing fame and fortune. For different people, it is either heaven or hell. The film lives up to its name, plus the shocking aerial photography at the beginning and the novel...

The perfect combination of dramatic and documentary style

As a pioneer of a documentary style film, in addition to introducing a large number of urban exterior shots, this film also does not use the traditional low-angle, night scene atmosphere rendering, and iconic characters such as "femme beauty" in the style of traditional film noir. What's more important is to change the "private detective" and "innocent"-style noir crime movie mode, and put the police as the core of the story. But a practical problem brought about by doing this is that it is...

A few tidbits, dedicated to my colleagues

I finished watching "The City That Never Sleeps" and I really liked it. Although it is a 1948 film, there is nothing vague about the depth of the film, the meticulousness and humor in the portrayal of the characters, and the impetus that draws the audience into it. It is produced by tens of millions of dollars at every turn, and it claims to be an elite team. Now, our movies, let alone other things, still can't keep up with it in terms of characterization.

               The whole story,...

The wonderful thing is not the story itself, but the whole city during the viewing of the movie.

This article was first published on the public account: Theater7

This may be the earliest documentary-like film I have ever seen, and the story in the film is probably just the tip of the iceberg of the entire city.

Prefer his alternate name: City of Naked, which is a harsher but more direct translation. The storyteller's commentary is tiresome, but it also provides a different point of view. The protagonist is not a character in the story, nor is it New York, the real protagonist is the event itself, a story that takes place in a corner of New York , so that every character falls victim to the story drive. The significance is to reduce the importance and emphasize the grandeur of New...

    Movie plot

The film seems to have a bizarre effect. In a semi-documentary account of New York and its people, Jean Dextel , a very attractive blonde model, finds herself in her Killed in his apartment. Detectives Don Muldo and Jimmy Halloran begin investigating the killing. Thus, suspicion falls on a variety of different people, all of whom have been shown to be involved in a series of burglaries. Not long after, a night-time burglar dies, he...

    • Shop girl: I can't imagine!

    • Muldoon: After Niles has been rifling through his valise apparently to check whether a supposed burglar has struck: "He got it didn't they?

Frank Niles: Looking crestfallen: "No, there's nothing missing. I don't have any valuables".

Muldoon: Suspiciously: "What were you looking for so hard just now - your BVD's?"

    • Narrator: Another day, another ball of fire rising in the summer sky. The city is quiet now, but it will soon be pounding with activity. This time yesterday, Jean Dexter was just another pretty girl, but now she's the marmalade on 10,000 pieces of toast.
