"The Handmaiden" is a love suspense movie directed by Park Chan-wook and starring 김민희 , Kim Tae ri , Ha Jung Woo , and Cho Jin Woong . It was released in South Korea on June 1, 2016.

The film is adapted from the novel "The City of Thorns" by the British writer Sarah Waters . It tells the story of The Handmaiden, a nobleman who inherited huge amounts of property during the Japanese colonial rule in Korea in 1930, the Count of a liar who coveted his property, and the maid employed by the Earl to approach The Handmaiden. And the story of money and love between the guardians of The Handmaiden .

The film was shortlisted for the Palme d'Or in the main competition of the 69th Cannes International Movie Festival . The film's art director, Liu Chengxi , won the Technical Vulcan Award at the Cannes International Movie Festival .

On October 7, 2016, the film won the 25th Buil Film Awards Puri Reader Jury Award, New Actress Award, and Best Art Award. On October 16, the film won the Audience Award at the 49th Sitges Fantasy Movie Festival in Spain . On November 25, the film won 제37회청룡영화상 Best Actress, Best New Actress, and Best Art Award.

On November 30, the film won the top five foreign language films in the 88th National Board of Review Awards .
