  • Leo, 12, was invited by his classmate Marcus to spend a holiday in his hometown. The idyllic scenery in the countryside is picturesque, and Leo feels very fresh. To his surprise, Marcus's sister, Marian, is beautiful and enthusiastic, and she often takes him to the market for shopping. Marcus had measles and couldn't play with Leo, so Leo had to play alone. He came to the black farm accidentally, and the farmer Ted asked him to bring a letter to Marianne. Leo was very happy. Every time he sends Marian a letter, he gets her grateful smile. Leo is very happy to be the messenger. Leo made friends with Hugh Trimingham, a veteran, and Hugh often told him stories. Leo discovered that Marian and Ted's letter was a love letter, and when he learned that Mrs. Maudsley was going to marry her daughter to Hugh, he refused to be the messenger of the letter.

      Examples of similar films

Winner of the Palme d'Or at the 1971 Cannes Film Festival, adapted from LP Hartley's book of the same name and written by Nobel Prize-winning playwright Harold Pinter An unforgettable love affair between men and women. Literary adaptation expert Losey took the film and faithfully presented the tension between the atmosphere of the country manor and the interpersonal relationship. The literary taste is also heavy. Although the interlaced processing of the two time-space in the middle confuses...

      the director said

This is one of three business cards that Joseph Losey and renowned playwright Harold Pinter produced together (the other two being The Servant in 1963 and The Accident in 1967). It is very distinctive in the use of film language and techniques. Although the film describes the love story between a wealthy lady and a "country wild man", the whole film does not directly show the scenes of lovers' rendezvous and pouring out their hearts. Their feelings are expressed through private eye...

The Go-Between: The Awakening of the Messenger

"The Past is a foreign country: they do things differently there." has been chosen as one of the most brilliant opening novels of all time. It comes from The Go-Between, the Chinese translation of "The Messenger", or "The Secret Messenger", is a novel by the British writer LP Hartley, which tells the story of what happened during the summer vacation when the young Leo was invited to the home of his classmates, Brandham Hall. story.

The novel was adapted into a film in 1970, starring...

      interloper in the adult world

Love stories that transcend class are not uncommon, but it is different when presented from the perspective of a child. Children peep into the emotional world of adults with a naive and ignorant eye. They have limitations in their vision, but it is precisely because of their limitations that the whole story is colored with innocence and pain. "The Secret Emissary" and "Atonement" are different presentations of the same perspective.

The little boy Leo in "The Secret Envoy" and the...

Comparison of the perspectives of Marcus and Leo

I was fortunate to watch this film, which is said to have many people not getting tickets at the 2021 British Masters Exhibition and regretting it for life. The part that makes me feel a little interesting is the difference between Leo and Marcus. First, the movie doesn't address exactly why Marcus invited Leo home. The film doesn't exactly explain why he invited Leo to his house as a guest, we can talk about it later.

      Then the film...

The tragedy of love in the English countryside is unfolded from the perspective of an innocent teenager. This "limited" perspective makes the real situation of love full of ignorance and imagination of teenagers. From Mercury, who leads the red line, to the mourners who beat the mandarin ducks, the tone of the film has also changed from fantasy to calm. The love that crosses classes and has no ability to resist is destined to end in tragedy. The shattered small revenge, or the traditional sense...

Today's Leo appears from time to time with inner reading, vague and confusing. Characters should be established first to be easily absorbed by audiences who have not read the original novel. For Leo of ''The Golden Age'', it was such a pain to be confused, exploited, and beaten by stages and morality about love and sexuality. The British children's play trick is really interesting, that is, attack each other in the gap, and become good friends in a blink of an...
