Ida: Every Frame is a Beautiful Picture

In Black and white film, every freeze frame is a beautiful picture. The Polish historical period in which the film is located is very complicated. During the process of Ada and her aunt looking for the burial place of her parents, the people they met did not want to mention the dark history before. In the war years, even ordinary citizens may have innocent blood on their hands. The massacres during the war have no possibility of vindication even after the war. The song and dance that appeared...

Where can the perception of comments go?

Poles and Chinese do have a lot in common.

In addition to sentimentality, nostalgia or disgust for a certain doctrine, what Poles and Chinese have in common is more of a state of mind. It may originate from the painful memory of being ravaged by aggression in the 19th and 20th centuries, or it may originate from the embarrassment and helplessness of seeking eternity.

Therefore, in the film, we do see a group of Chinese directors who want to sell emotional accumulation. Some...

      gaze

It is often difficult to make people feel 100% in the retrospect of history, because no matter how we look back, the past always maintains a relatively distant and almost secret distance from us. We can explore, find, perceive, understand, and think about the past, but we can't really devote our mind and body to it. Director Paul Pawlikowski also uses his unique vision and elaboration method to take us to gaze at this history that belongs to Poland past.

This is the second black and...

      Atonement for two

This is a story about redemption.

Wanda's family is the victim, her sister and brother-in-law, especially her son, died in Poles, they are good people, they are buried in their ancestral graves. And Wanda became the state prosecutor, who killed tens of thousands of people during the Great Purge. She was guilty, and she was buried in the national cemetery, where the victor executed the executioner, or didn't deserve to be with the family. Wanda committed suicide because of guilt. She...

      Pushing the limits of photography

The film retains the icy atmosphere of Eastern Europe, just like the background of the time when the story takes place. In the 4:3 frame, the director challenges the boundaries of film masters, the breakthrough of composition, and the pressure of depth of field. Every frame is a superb master-level photographic work, with a lot of blank space, everywhere, and you can feel your head up three feet. There are gods. The lighting is narrating with light and shadow, which is very textured, and the...

Super great! The photography and soundtrack are very good, regardless. Some people say that the story is thin, but I think it is very powerful. Different from the coldness of "Leviathan", this coldness has the power to warm people's...

    Behind the scenes gags

Agata Tzebkhovska, who plays Anna, is a college student and has never had any acting experience before.
The Danish composer Kristian Eidnes Andersen wrote the soundtrack for the film, but his music was rarely used in the film. Most of the time we heard Bach's works.
The director has been unable to find a suitable actress to play Anna. He mobilized his friends to secretly take pictures of suitable candidates and bring them to him. In the...

    Evaluation action

The film is an Eastern European art film set in the 1960s, and it is a black and white film, which usually means a long, deep and not-so-exciting storyline at all. Polish director Paulikski’s "Ada" has these as soon as it comes up. The hypnotic element seems to have lost a lot of audience popularity. Indeed, this is a slow-paced, restrained and suppressed film. It is about an orphan Ada who grew up in a monastery after the war in...

    Movie quotes

    • Wanda: Do you have sinful thoughts sometimes?

      Anna: Yes.

      Wanda: About carnal love?

      Anna: No.

Wanda: That's a shame. You should try, otherwise what sort of sacrifice are these vows of yours?

    • Lis: You've no idea of the effect you have, do you?

    • Lis: ...come along then. You'll listen to us play, we'll walk on the beach.

      Anna: And then?

Lis: Then we'll buy a dog... Get married, have children... Get a house.

      Anna: And then?

      Lis: The usual. Life.
