Hunger: The Body is Their Last Weapon

Stomach acid slowly burns out ulcers... The ribs are rubbing against the chest wall... My legs are numb and weak... I want to smile when I close my lips, but they dry up and ooze blood... In the end, what makes the heart still beat, the blood still burn, and the spiritual platform still clear? The IRA prisoners in the prison, with their ambitions, are shirtless, only covered with linen to cover their shame, and with their weak spines, they endure the brutal beatings of the government army....

"Hunger", and "Nanjing! Nanjing! "feel different

It's hard to believe that "The Hunger" is actually a debut feature. When I saw the interview with the black director Steve McQueen, I still failed to connect the director with his image. So disproportionate yet so complementary.

Although I have seen many good films reflecting political issues in Northern Ireland before, I still know very little about this history. This film looks like a three-act play. The subtitle introduction at the beginning of the film fails to evoke a sense of...

"I don't know the road to tomorrow"

's body is their last weapon. This is the definition of a terrorist and a revolutionary, and a watershed between true faith and all cults. Fasting, in the past, was an assiduous, silent way of almost all religions. In the past hundred years, it has evolved into a remarkable and political appeal. Now, a search on the Internet is mainly related to weight loss.

This is the most shocking work of the year, and some media rated it as the top ten in the world. 7...

      death of an idealist

Director Steve McQueen told the story of an idealist who went on a hunger strike to death for his beliefs in the film Hunger. The background of the story is the 1981 Northern Ireland military protests. The protagonist of the play, Bobby Sands, claimed that he was on a hunger strike for freedom. But he was a soldier, and he was involved in a war. And war is a political act.

The one-and-a-half-hour movie, which had few lines, was mostly arranged in a 17-minute dialogue between Sands and...

      Politics is Violence

It's great to die for a better tomorrow that you can't wait for. Stories like this one who sacrificed their lives for some kind of political freedom are the most familiar to us. From childhood to adulthood, I can see on various propaganda materials that a certain Communist Party member did not change his color under torture and tyranny, died heroically, and even shouted: "Long live communism!" and so on. People who watch a play just think it is a play and watch it, even if you...

    • By Ward 2023-05-06 16:38:48

Uncle Fa's face and hungry little body were added two stars, and the mood of rushing to fast-forward all the way was reduced by one star. I didn't know the political background of Northern Ireland's sectarian opposition before watching the film, so I wanted to die, but it looked really...

Continued struggle of RI inmates inside a prison. Steve McQueen's directorial debut is amazing! In addition to expressing resistance, the inner fluctuations of a prison guard and a riot team member were vividly expressed in just a few strokes, and a large number of long shots gave the most intuitive psychological impact. Weight loss, full nudity, maggots, beatings, and respect for the actors in the film. Looking forward to Michael Fassbender's second full nude collaboration...

The rhythm and theme of the film are very appropriate, Fassbender's performance is impeccable, and I feel bad for being so thin~~~~ It's a pity that I know too little about that history, ignorant and ignorant! ! !...

    Behind the scenes gags

The first day of filming in Northern Ireland was a conversation between Sands and a Catholic priest about the decision to implement a hunger strike. The scene lasted ten minutes. The two actors, Michael Fassbender and Liam Cunningham, took a total of four shots before passing.
After the long shot of a conversation between Sands and the priest was taken, the film crew put on a 10-week vacation, waiting for the actor Fassbender to lose...

    Evaluation action

"Hunger" tells the struggle between faith, body and politics. Director McQueen prefers long shots and large dialogues with blank spaces, and he is very cautious and particular about editing each shot. (East Net Review)
The film focuses on the hunger strike in 1981 and revolves around the life of the Northern Irish Republican Army prisoner Bobby Sands in the last six weeks before his death. As the debut of Steve McQueen's feature...

    Movie quotes

    • Father Dominic Moran: So what happened to your eye, Bobby?

      Bobby Sands: What?

Father Dominic Moran: Did you get a dig for yourself? Your eye.

      Bobby Sands: Difference of opinion.

Father Dominic Moran: Mmm. How's the other fella?

Bobby Sands: Oh, a lot worse. Believe me.

    • Bobby Sands: I always felt that thief next to Jesus got off lightly.

Father Dominic Moran: Ah, but he recognized his sins.

      Bobby Sands: Did he though?

Father Dominic Moran: Aye. Said as much.

Bobby Sands: When you're hung from a cross you're gonna say anything. Jesus offers him a seat next to his daddy in a place called paradise you're always gonna put your hand up and have a piece of that.

Father Dominic Moran: Aye. Even when it's nailed to your cross.

    • Father Dominic Moran: [offering Sands a cigarette] Bit of a break from smokin' the Bible, eh?

      Bobby Sands: [agrees]

Father Dominic Moran: Anyone work out which book is the best smoke?

Bobby Sands: We only smoke the Lamentations. A right miserable cigarette.
