Andersen's original work is a good story, and the selflessness and willingness in love are deeply described, but Disney's adaptation has cut down the tragic color of the original work very seriously in order to run through its consistent happy family ending. A lot of gags are funny, and the key love scenes take up too little time in the film. The discussion of the father-daughter relationship is an innovative point, but the handling is a bit sloppy.
