Hal's career began in 1969, when he starred in the Dutch TV series "Flores", and it shined with his lead role in "The Pleasure of Turkey" (1973), which was released in 1999. Was named the best Dutch film of the century. After gaining international recognition with " Survival Run or Soldier of Orange " (1977) and " Spetters " (1980), he switched to filming American movies such as " Nighthawks " (1981) and " 2020 " (1982) , Starring in the latter, the self-conscious robot Roy Batty (Roy Batty).

Born in the Netherlands, his parents are drama teachers. When he was 15 years old, he went to work on a freighter for one year.
