      【269】Lincoln

The 8th film directed by Sri Lanka, a main theme biopic.

In fact, I found that Spielberg's films have a characteristic, that is, the general direction of the main line is very clear, but there are often many characters and dialogues, so it takes two brushes to notice more details. In particular, the...

      Faithfully restore historical figures

First of all, this film is not a Hollywood-style commercial film. The film only has a not-so-sublime war scene at the beginning, and the rest of the time is focused on Lincoln's second term, and the Civil War is about to end 4 months. The film doesn't spend too much time on war, which was...

The bright-sounding abolition of slavery was passed through election bribery. Although the goal sounds noble (it does not say how much the North’s motivation to suppress the South is included), Lincoln’s methods are so dictatorial, it makes me feel bad about the Republicans and Democrats. Every single lines of this movie is gold! Daniel Day-Lewis actually earned his Oscar by all means. However, this shall be more a documentary video than a documentary film, because film needs its twist and turn while this one possess none.

    Lincoln quotes

    • [Giving a speech at a dedication, Lincoln stands beside the flagpole, and with great ceremony takes off his hat, removes a piece of paper from inside and unfolds it, then puts on his glasses]

Abraham Lincoln: [reading] The part assigned to me is to raise the flag which, if there be no fault in the machinery, I will do. And, when up, it shall be for the people to keep it up.

[takes off his glasses and re-folds the paper]

      Abraham Lincoln: That's my speech.

      [laughter]

    • Abraham Lincoln: [greeting a pair of visitors from Jefferson City] I heard tell once of a Jefferson City lawyer who had a parrot that would wake him each morning crying out 'today's the day the world shall end as scripture has foretold'. And one day, the lawyer shot him for the sake of peace and quiet I presume, thus fulfilling, for the bird at least, his prophecy.

      [the guests don't laugh]
