Listening to the second half of "Cold Blood", the author's feelings for Perry are obvious, especially when compared with Dick's description. Small and powerful, abandoned childhood, lonely in the lively crowd, hating being despised but always thinking that the society has not given his talent with corresponding applause. The author projects himself on his characters. So the casting really couldn't be worse. Pepe is too handsome and the girl is too tall and Toby is too ugly (sorry) and it's all a story.
