    Michael Emerson was born on September 7, 1954 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, USA. He studied at South Tamar County High School in Iowa. He graduated from Drake University with a degree in theater arts in 1976, and then moved to New York City. As he could not find a job related to acting, he became a part-time freelance illustrator for " Illustrated by Boston Globe and New York Post . In 1986, he moved to Jacksonville, Florida. Between 1986 and 1993, he played roles in some stage plays produced by local theaters, and served as a director and teacher at Flagler College.
