James Cook
James Cook, FRS, RN (James Cook, October 27, 1728 (old Julian calendar ) - February 14, 1779). Known as James Cook (Captain Cook), he was a Royal Navy officer, Navigator, the Prodigal Explorer, and cartographer.
Cook served in the British Merchant Marine as a young man, and after joining the Royal Navy in 1755, he served in the Seven Years' War , and later helped map much of the mouth of the St. Lawrence during the Battle of Quebec . After the war, in 1760 S produced several detailed maps for Newfoundland. Cook's ability to draw maps was favored by the Admiralty and the Royal Society, leading to his appointment as captain of the Endeavour in 1766 for his first voyage to the Pacific Ocean.
On February 14, 1779, during his third expedition to the Pacific Ocean, Cook was killed in a fight with the islanders of Hawaii.
Cook has sailed to the Pacific three times, leading the crew to become the first Europeans to land on the east coast of the Commonwealth of Australia and the Hawaiian Islands , and set the record for the first time a European vessel sailed around New Zealand. Using a gyroscope, he created numerous maps of the Pacific islands between New Zealand and Hawaii with an accuracy and scale unmatched by previous generations. During his exploratory journey, Cook also named many newly discovered islands and things, and most of his maps of islands and coastlines appeared for the first time in Western atlases and nautical atlases.

Character Dispute
The contribution of James Cook's new discoveries to the Pacific region, as well as the truth of his murder, has always been one of the focuses of academic debate. Concerned about the reasons for Cook's murder, most scholars believe that the civilization of the Hawaiian islanders is different from the Western civilization. The islanders turned from blind worship to resentment of Cook, which is the reason for Cook's murder. This view was obtained by American Anthropologist Marshall. Scholars such as Sullins support it; however, some scholars question this view, arguing that it is inappropriate to view the Hawaiian islanders as a less rational group. Scholars who support this view include American Anthropologist Gananath Obeyesekere, among others, who believe that Hawaiian islanders have the same sanity as Cook and his entourage, and that Cook was killed because his temper changed later in the trip. It's weird, and looting supplies on the island will eventually lead to murder.
In the mid-18th century, the influence of Western civilization on other civilizations was one of the focuses of debate among Western thinkers. Many scholars believed that Western civilization optimized other civilizations, but some scholars believed that the invasion of Western civilization had corrupted other civilizations. Cook's three voyages came at the climax of this debate, so his voyage discoveries more or less gave Western thinkers a little closer to a culture on the other side of the globe that was little known to the West. However, Cook was not particularly concerned with this proposition, and from what he saw in his weekly journals, it was not evident that he was particularly interested in the prevailing view of the "Noble Savage" at the time. In the 19th century, the Polish-British novelist Joseph Conrad once compared the motives of the Navigator and the Prodigal Explorer in previous dynasties . He believed that Cook's previous Navigator and the Prodigal Explorer were mainly motivated by "acquisitive" (acquisitive), while Cook's Primarily motivated by "scientific", there is a significant difference between the two in nature. However, other scholars believe that the cost of Cook's three voyages should be borne by the British government with public funds, which means that the plan and purpose of the sea are subject to taxpayers' monitoring. The place was declared British territory, so it would not be accurate to say that his voyage was not at all "predatory". After entering the 20th century, many Western scholars began to believe that the previous voyage discoveries led to the introduction of venereal diseases, alcoholic beverages, and firearms with Western civilization to places that were not developed by Westerners, and the harm to these places outweighed the benefits.
