Elizabeth McGovern is the daughter of high school teacher Catherine Walcott (née Watt) and college professor William Montgomery McGovern. Her father's grandfather was the explorer William Montgomery McGovern, and her mother's great-grandfather was the former American diplomat Ethelbertwa. After McGovern's father got a job at the Law School of the University of California, Los Angeles , their family moved to Los Angeles. Her younger sister is novelist Kemi McGovern.
